2000 Romeo w/ Piston Slap?
2000 Romeo w/ Piston Slap?
I've done some searching in past posts, but, didn't really find an answer. I own a 2000 XLT. 4.6L engine w/ vin: X18W (Romeo, right!?) It's a 4X4, extended cab. All stock. I've got about 22K miles, and have started to hear some noise I don't like. Only on cold mornings, usually when it's damp. It started out sounding like a slipping belt. Now it sounds like there's something ticking, and sometimes knocking, inside the engine. Typical diesel sound. Sometimes, very loud. Only happens on cold startups. Goes away in a few minutes when warmed up. I checked the oil filter, it's a Motorcraft 820S, so this shouldn't be the drain back problem discussed in the past.
From the descriptions I've read in other posts, it sounds like PS.
Anyone know of this problem in this engine.
I'll be dropping the truck off to the local dealer next week for some deer repair, and would like them to fix or replace this as well.

I've noticed the same thing only two times so far. Both very cold mornings and just at startup (2001 4.6 L, Romeo). About 2 seconds after startup the noise was gone.
I'm using AMSOIL 5w-20 with AMSOIL SDF-11 filter. Wondering about using Mobil1 0W-30?

myfordlives,
The 4.6L Ford V8 is built at two plants. The ROMEOsville plant in the USA and the Windsor plant in Canada (Aay?)The Windsor plant engines are said to piston slap more often than the Romeosville engines. You couldn't prove that by me. My '98 Windsor 4.6L starts easily and runs smoothly Hot or cold.I use the motocraft filter and Mobil 1
