Need some help!
Ok guys, I need so help with this one. I bought my truck from a guy with about 82,000 miles on it (1995 F-150 300ci-6). After performing the first oil change, I got the idea that he really didn’t keep up with “truck maintenance.” I was wondering if you guys could help me diagnose a potential problem. I noticed that the truck idles a little funny. When I start it up, everything is fine, but the engine pulses up and down a little in the R’s. I’d be more specific w/ numbers but it doesn’t have a tack. It’s not very noticeable, but you can pick up on it if you are listening for it. Also with starting out in first gear (5spd manual), it seems to lunge forward “with the engine.” I’ll let the clutch out and hit the gas a little and the truck acts like it is loading up. In order for it not to happen, I have to ease into the gas real slow and then shift to second at around 10mph. From 2nd on, it’s fine.
Another thing I notice is that it lacks power in 4th going up hills. I know I’m not going to get ripped out of my seat with a 300ci, but this engine should have no problem accelerating from 45mph to 65mph in fairly good time. My last engine was a 4-banger (rice burner) and it had no power. Anything is an improvement over that scrap metal, but I expect a little more from my Ford. Are their any sensors that might be causing the lack of high-end power? Thanks in advance for all the help guys!

4.9L 300ci-6
Husky Mats
31x10.5x15 BFG Mud’s
Pioneer CD Receiver
Future Mod’s:
K&N FIPK(on the way), Dual Exhaust, Superchip
Anyone that has a good exhaust setup on there 4.9L 300ci let me know. I want big sound and have been looking at a Flowmaster 40 series. Would it be better to run a single high-flow cat with dual outlet? Thanks guys.

No help on the idle problem but, my neighbor had an older Ford truck that was geared so low that unless he was pulling a trailer he always started in second gear. Starting in first he had to shift in just a few feet. I think it was geared to pull tree stumps.

Hey Studly, I would side on T Ellenberger's side too especially running the 31's. If you crawl under the rear of the truck there should be a tag on the rear differential, try and get the number off of it. This will tell you what rear-end you have, 355, 410 and whether it is a limited-slip or not. With the rough idle, it could be just the way the engine idles. I had a '87 with the 300 (loved that motor) and it felt like it was running rough too but the mechanic said that since everything is in a straight line and going up and down, that it is harder to balance the entire engine compared to a "V" motor. It would always have a slight roughness to it. Keep us posted on all
