Question engine reving

i have a 99-V6, manual transmission....when i take it out of gear to slow down, my foot off the clutch...just on the brake...the engine will rev on its own. If i tap the excelerator, it does not stop the engine from reving. i have had it back to the dealer once...and they say nothing is wrong but it continues to happen. can anyone help me or tell me what might be wrong???
thank you!!

ps
i also posted this in the V6 area...was not sure where it best fit!!

Mel,

How high an RPM does it rev to? Does it do the same thing when you are stopped or only when the truck is moving?

JMC,

once i come to a complete stop it seems to come back down to normal. as far as how high it revs....i do not have an indicator for RPM's but it sounds pretty loud...it is like going 25-30 MPH in first gear. thanks for any suggestions...

Well this isn't nearly the same as mine but when I'm driving, if i take my truck and put it in nuetral while rolling down a hill (just to see how fast it would get going) then my engine will pick up RPM's. mine will jump 1k RPM's.

Even when your coming to a stop don't put it nuetral. Use the engine to help you brake. Put it in the next gear down and let off the clutch. It will help you slow down and prolong the life of your brakes.

Bones,

thank you for your response....i will try what you are talking about and see if it helps...but i will say it does happen consistantly. Like it has not happened at all today but yesterday it did it all the way home. it is kind of frustrating.
thanks again,
mel

I have a 97 4.6 manual. It does the same thing. The revs will stay up around 1300 RPMs or so, then after a few seconds will come back down to idle. I really haven't given it much thought. I figure it must be something to do with the air conditioner or the heat. I don't know. Mine is out of warranty now so I don't think I will be taking it in.

If you happen to figure out what is causing this rev thing, please let me know.

BTW I have a K&N filter on it!

OK, here goes a wild-*** guess. I've noticed some Japanese cars do the same thing and I've developed a theory. I believe the computer keeps the RPMs high to make shifting easier (or smoother). It's the equivalent of goosing the gas a little before letting out the clutch.
That's my .02 worth.

actually this is very common, go drive a taurus and put it in nuetral on the highway, it will stay around 2500rpm. It is done for emission purposes

i understand what you all are saying....but this problem just started happening about 3 weeks ago...the first 17,000 it did not happen at all. that is why i think something has happened or something is wrong. do you agree???

This is a common issue with emission controls. Evidently abruptly taking your foot off the gas increases emissions. If this just started, I suspect some "dirty" burn from bad gas, clogged air filter, bad plugs, etc. There may also be a faulty sensor somewhere. There could also be a programmed rpm or mph threshold under which it won't happen - try waiting to push the clutch in until the rpms are around 1000 and see if it acts normally.

IMHO, its always good practice to keep it in gear anyway to maintain control over the truck. You can downshift without burning the clutch by briefly stabbing the throttle to match the revs.

mel,

Glad to hear you got it fixed. Mine stays at about 1000 rpm when I clutch in at speed and that is normal. I wish it would drop to idle but you can't have everything.

I have 97 4.6 5 speed 2x4. When I push the clutch in rev. stay at 1000 rpm but if I hold clutch in for a few seconds the rpm drops to 600 idle speed. Tehn if I take my foot off the clutch the rpms stay at 600 and I can coast at that engine rpm till I put it back in gear.

Thumbs up

thanks for all of the responses. i just wanted to say that the problem was solved. i went back to the dealership when it was acting up and had the service manager ride with me. after he witnessed it first hand, then he took it back....it was a throttle position sensor. problem solved!! yea!!
