Question what really are worth the money??

Hi fellow ford owners.....i am back to ford after trying dodge...i am not used to these newer motors, i am still used to the 302's and 351's. So now that i have a 2001 with a 5.4L i am wondering what kinds of mods are worth the money and time to put them on. Naturally i am looking for power but no decrease in gas mileage. I am wondering like what is the best seen intakes, exhausts, etc.????? thanks ahead on any info!!! john.

Thumbs up

Superchips brand chip for sure (dino tested at 27 HP and 46 lb/ft of torque).

The Air Force 1 intake currently has one of the highest HP/TQ gains on the market (dino tested at 17.9 hp and 29 lb/ft of torque).

That takes care of the intake, but the exhaust needs to breath as well. I have the Magnaflow Cat-Back exhaust; the best performance and sound by far - IMHO of course. The Superchips is a great start; contact Mike T. in the Computer Chips Message section. Mike sells all three mods.

thanks guys....

I have heard of the superchips before, and some other versions of the such, but what is the overall affects??? would i have to run higher octane fuel??? and what about mpg's and hp's??? any better than stock??? as for the intake?? do you guys know any real numbers on this??? and is there any websites that i can check these items out on?? I had a dodge dakota that was recently totalled and i had fashioned a new intake out of PVC pipe and some connectors that allowed increase of air flow b/c the origainal air hat had air chambers to decrease noise and it also seemed to heat the air a little. I am wondering if the same is possible on these fords with that huge air cleaner holder?!?!?

The 4 mods that make the most sense and actually work are: chip, aftermarket intake, cat-back exhaust and Flowmaster Y-collector. When you do the exhaust also have the factory y-pipe cut out and a Flowmaster Y-collector welded in it's place. None of this is 'illegal', in spite of what some mechanics say, and all of these mods will give more HP and torque and will improve fuel economy unless you like the performance improvements so much that you mash your foot down on the little pedal to the right more often that you do now...

Stay away from the throttle body spacers though... They just suck the cash out of your pocket, just like the goofy sucking sound they make after you install them...

I did the airbox replacement first then the cat-back then the chip and then the Y. If I did it again I would do the chip first, airbox second and the the Y and cat-back at the same time.

Yep, with a chip you need to run premium fuel. That's how the chip generates more HP/torque. These engines were specifically designed to run regular un-leaded gas. The chip re-calibrates the computer to omtimize it to run with higher octane premium fuel.

There are a bunch of threads on aftermarket airbox replacements as well as some home-brew mods to 'fix' the factory airbox to make it less restrictive.
Check out the threads on aftermarket exhaust as well.
