Question tachometer

Friends,

Has anyone installed an after marked tachometer on their truck? If so, could this project be done by myself and how difficult is it? Who makes an acceptable tachometer?

Greetings ferdi, Check out www.autometer.com. I installed one of their tachs and gauge pods. I would definitely recommend this brand. First off, the gaugeworks pod places the tach on the A- pillar. Its a great spot for an aftermarket tach and looks pretty good. There's some good photos of the pods on their site. Autometer instruments are highly regarded in racing cirles, so needless to say, the tachs themselves are of excellent quality. I went with a 6000 rpm unit. As far as installation, it's not too difficult. Four wires to connect: power, lights, ground, and a connection to the computer. The computer is the tricky one. You have to connect the wire to a specific wire coming out of the computer. Autometer's tech. dept. can tell you exactly which computer wire for your application. This is a very tight fit. I used snap lock connectors on that one. Also, have some wire looming on hand to protect the wires and have some extra wire on hand. A couple the tach wires were too short. As far as cost, I won't bother quoting what I paid in ridiculous Canadian dollars, but, I suspect about $100 U.S. would be close. This may be more than some other aftermarket tachs, but, the gauge pod and the quality of Autometer make it worth it in my mind. Good Luck!

autometer is definately the way to go. i put a 3700 in my truck a few months ago and it works great. i just added an autometer pro shift lite a few days ago for that added "race appeal." both were super easy to install.
