Cool

The proper way of course is to have the engine checked with a scanner that will read a stored or hard code.

I had the same problem recently however, it took me quite sometime to get around to having it checked and then repaired.

The engine ran too good to be anything too serious so I thought maybe it was a worn gas cap gasket that was not making a good seal anymore. I went to my local Ford dealer and paid $17.00 and put it on hoping the light would stay off after I disconnected the battery for about ten minutes.

After firing it up and driving for about three miles the light came back on.

I cleared the light several times only to discover that the light would not come on when the truck was warmed up or hot from normal driving. If it cooled off or sat overnight, the light would come on within one to three miles from my house.

I took the truck to my local repair shop (Ginas Auto) and it was diagnosed as a bad O2 Sensor downstream, specifically a bad heater.

I replaced the sensor (wrong side the first time, should have been the passenger side, and it solved the problem.

Hope this helps---regards,

Post Check Engine light

I just drove to Memphis from Columbus OH and back last week, about 1000 miles. No problems. It's about a nine hour drive each way. Right before I got home, I stopped at a gas station to pick up a few things. I get back in, and bam, the check engine light comes on. I lived about another two miles away so I drove home and checked all the fluids and all was fine. Oil was clean and not burnt, tranny fluid was good, batt was good etc. The next day I took it to the Ford dealer about 15 miles away, and the light went out half way there and has been off since (3 days) so I turned around and went back home. Now, the light came on the MOMENT I rolled 66600 miles. Notice the three 6's. Now, is this something I should be concerned about, or am I the victim of some cruel and unusual hoax by Ford engineers.

Tighten your gas cap. You may have left it slightly loose when you bought gas and that will cause the Check Engine Light to come on.

It sounds like it is marginally loose and causing the computer to think it is, then think it's not, then think it is...
