Fuel Pump keeps running
I have a '97 4x4 with 5.4L. I am having an intermittent problem where the truck won't start. It turns over fine, but never even acts like it is going to fire off. It behaves like it is out of gas. I usually end up waiting anywhere from 2hrs to overnight for it to start, at which time it starts right up and runs perfect.
I have had the dealership check it twice (its there now) and both times they tell me the codes check out fine. I can't ever get it to the shop while it won't start.
I have had anywhere from 1/4 tank to completely full when it happens.
It has happened when it has sat for 1hr to 24hrs.
When I have trouble, I noticed that when I turn the key, I can hear the fuel pump running and it never stops. When it does start, the fuel pump does not do this.
I changed the fuel filter when it wouldn't start, while I had it disconnected, we turned the key and gas came pumping out.
My guess is that somewhere the fuel system is sucking air and won't allow the fuel system to pressurize. Can't they check something other than 'codes' to find out what is wrong?

Try checking fuel pressure at the fuel rail with a gauge when it won't start. If it has fuel pressure at rail it could be your ignition system.
