Angry Idle drop in reverse

I have a 93 F150XLT 302, w/81K auto trans. The engine will die after driving for 10-15 minutes when putting the car in reverse from an idle. This strange occurence only happens between 15 to 45 minutes after the car starts. The same thing happens if I drop to 2nd or 1st. After 45 minutes the RPM only drops slightly (-150rpm) then recovers (750). When put in drive there is no indication of RPM drop what so ever. What could it be and where is it located?

The transmission filter is probably loose or clogged. You should change your tranny fluid and filter.

Take care,

Thanks chris,
Thats one possibility I would of never thought of. How would filter cause such a large RPM engine drop? I changed trans filter & oil at 40K. Will do this week and follow-up.

Unfortunately, I can't explain the science of it, I just know that 95% of the automatic F150's I see with that complaint are fixed by replacing the filter. About half of the time the filter is loose, the other half of the time it's dirty. The usual complaint is engine stall when put in reverse, but there are always variations, depending on the customer.

Take care,
-Chris

Talking

Chris,

Your Good, Very Good! The transmisssion filter was laying in the bottom of the pan! I did a 100% fluid replacement along with a new filter. Everything is back to normal, I like my truck again.

Thanks again and happy holiday to you and your family

Steve

I love it when it works that easy.

Thanks for the kind words, and I return the sentiments.

Take care,
-Chris
