Unhappy Check Engine for no reason

I've got a 98, 5.4L F150. The check engine
light comes on. When its' checked it comes
back with the message "no codes". I can't figure out why check engine comes on when it
has nothing to report.
Is is a faulty ECM? One mechanic told me to
try a new gas cap.
It's happened three times and will probably happen again. Anyone got any ideas out there?
After replacing gas cap with a stant type, the check engine light came on again at 1/2 tank of gas. Has anyone out there ever had Ford replace the ECM to see if that was the problem?
How much does the ECM cost?
Does Ford have a step to follow in their service manual/flowchart if check engine is on and "no codes" is reported.
Anyone have the manual?
