Piston Slap Engine tick all inclusive thread
Piston Slap Engine tick all inclusive thread
Sorry searched Engine threads three times and I can't find the thread that had all the Piston Slap info. Can someone tell me where it is?
Thanks a million.
racin36 and the other rough idlers I still have my rough idle at 19500 miles. Been with me since 6000. Got the cold morning slap too. But Ford says it is a common characteristic and not to worry. Was verbally offered the 7 year extended. Didn't take it. Will finally fill out papers for dispute settlement. Need info thus the request for the slap page. Oh yeah got a new problem. Battery light comes on. Alt was already replaced but it still comes on. In shop for 2nd time (two week stretch) Could not duplicate. Reset the PCM for the Idle..again. Truck was driven 23 miles during the two weeks. Started truck at dealer it make a weird sound. Belt type/grind. Shut off cranked again and it turned over weird. Suspect this happens when the truck sits for a one week period. Dome ligth fades when power window button is pressed (Is this normal??)
Will post my saga when I get time. Bought new house.
Take care all.
I'm Back,
Truckowner

What year, motor, etc do you have ? When was the motor built (that's on a label on the driver's side valve cover) ?
Seems that I remember that Windsor built 4.6 and 5.4 motors built before early 1999 were susceptible to piston slap due to "pison-bore clearance issues", according to Ford...
It's not normal, regardless of what the stupid dealer says, however I have it with 65k miles and my truck is running great. I'm just living with the slapping problem since I've also read within these message threads that an engine swap could cause headaches unto themselves.
Use quality engine oil and filter and the problem will be reduced. I use Mobil 1 0w-30 in the cold and 5w-30 in the warm with a Motorcraft or Mobil 1 filter. Stay away from Fram, STP, no-name, Pennzoil and other cheap oil filters ! Go for filters that offer high flow rates. There's a thred out here some place that has a link to a guy's website that does independent objective oil filter testing... Mobil 1, Purolator Pure 1, K&N, Motorcraft, etc have good filters that have the flow rates that seem to helkp the slapping problem. Also, I found that using Castrol Syntec made my truck slap 5 times worse.
Search on "piston slap" and you'll find a bunch of threads on the topic.

Thanks ronhop. I tried the search button but it got me into the recall database or something like that. Maybe I used the wrong search button.
I use to have my profile displayed with my truckowner handle (C.B. term I know) I have a F-150 2000 5.4 from Canada. Built August 1999 after the supposide fix of the infamous slap thus no more engine swaps.
I will continue to search for the page.
Thanks for the oil and filter tips I will use them when I maintain the truck. Right now I don't even open the hood because I want to make sure that they can't come back a plead something stupid like it is the oil causing the problems.
Thanks again ronhop,
Truckowner
