Question Ready to Hop-up!

I have been driving my '97 S/C Lariat for over four years and am ready to give it a little something in the "go" department. It's packing the 4.6 with a 4R70W auto and a 3.55 rear and I've got about 71000 miles on it. I was wondering if I could get some feedback on any of the following and which could be used together or should be kept separate: Superchip module (does this affect the shifting program or just top-end HP and torque?), headers, 70mm throttle body, MAF, K&N Filtercharger kit, undersize pulleys, or even a supercharger? What HP/torque increases can I expect from this motor with any or all of these additions? I would essentially like it to run like a very strong 5.4, if not better, but still be driveable and affordable. Thanks for your input, and by the way, has anybody else wanted to drop that Navigator 32-valver in their F150 besides me? Just curious.

1997 F150 4x2 Lariat S/C, 4.6 auto, Oxford White and Tan Metallic, P/everything, Kenwood CD deck, Flowmaster exhaust (single), K&N filter element, soft tonneau cover, 17" Off-Road rims w/ 275/60R17 Eagle GTII tires

fordman3;
I had contemplated getting the 5.4 in the 250SD, but i'm going diesel there instead.
I will receive my f-150 w/ the 5.4 tomorrow.
I called ATI about their intercooled superchargers.
I informed them of the applications I was seeking.
The new units for the Ford EFI is the P600B
W/ a true 55%-60% increase at the wheels.
That would mean 310-320 at the ground.
I also got info on the D1-B system.
He gave me the # to a place in Golden Co. 303-279-4072.
That place got 400hp to the ground in their 98 5.4L. This was on a 10lb unit.
THey also told me that at about 1800 rpm they saw #'s just over 200 hp.
That is what the new 5.4 is putting to the ground at it's peak point. Since they are intercooled and at that psi you don't have to worry about dentonation.
The new units that will replace the D1-B for trucks will be the P1SC.
BTW the P600B is $3896, complete from ATI. http://www.procharger.com/procharger3.html
If money was an issue I'd try the powerdyne system. I've spoke w/ them and they have some good truck units starting about 2g.
In one of my hot rod mags this guy ran a 11sec quarter in a ford ltd w/ a 6lb powerdyne unit.
The ATI gives you the big #'s but the powerdyne is more cost friendly. http://www.powerdyne.com/

I'd also suggest going w/ a flex fan, airaid or k&n filter and a dual exhaust.
This place has a twicepipes from the cat back for 289.00 http://www.autojet.com/.
John has given me info over there.
Goodluck.

fordman3,
The Superchip would certainly give you more get up and go and is relatively inexpensive compared to other performance parts. It greatly improves the shifting of the auto tranny by hitting the gears much faster/firmer. You must use Premium fuel though. The top end fuel limiter can be removed and for your 4.6L...the HP gain is +26 HP and +40 ft/lb of torque (about 10-12%). Contact Mike Troyer at Performance Products (who is also in the computer chips section on this site):

or check out their web site -----> https://www.f150online.com/scpp/index.html

Also look in the classified section on here to see if you can find a used chip with your specific computer code (i.e. ATC2) ---> https://www.f150online.com/classifieds/viewads.html

The K&N filter or the FIPK would be a good investment also. I believe it would add another 5-7+ hp.

In my 5.4L..I have the chip and K&N filter..and it runs like a 'raped ape'!! You will not be dissapointed..especially since these are some of the least expensive aftermarket parts you can install.

Another good answer would be to switch over to synthetic fluids, (Amsoil, Mobil, Redline, Royal Purple, etc, etc) as their higher performance will allow more of your engines power to reach the wheels.

Other than that, I'd go with Dustoffs suggestion about the Superchip, then maybe an aftermarket induction system with a better MAF.

The Supercharger units add most of this in one group, they are expensive and sometimes you end up with less boost due to detontation (or so I've read here).

Upgrading the ignition system and plugs will do well too. (MSD, Jacobs, Bosch +4, NGK)

Lots of stuff to do, and most don't require too much effort.

fordman3: the 97 4.6 already comes with 70mm throttle body--upgrade is 75 mm bbk pn 1703, but i can't tell you anything about it. Yes, I too long to see the 5.4dohc in the f150--THEY'D SELL EM SO FAST, THEY WOULDN'T KNOW WHAT HIT EM.Here's hoping that someday Fomoco will satisfy our wishes for a tru HP truck, without resorting to the Lightning.
