Question What is required in a pulley upgrade?

Everyone seems to like the pulley upgrade for extra horsepower. What exactly does this upgrade require? Is it a job for the moderately capable home mechanic? How much $$$?

I'll leave the do-it-yourself advice to those more experienced but have a caveat for you. If you intend to put a camper on this rig or tow anything substantial, you might think twice before going with the power pulleys. I have a 98' 4.6 f250 super cab and experienced severe overheating problems when traveling with my camper on going up hills at 3k rpms. In all fairness I have to say that without the camper on, I never had any problems although i have to say i never noticed any pwer difference either. YMMV

Thumbs up

Boss 46.... The job is easy. Probably the biggest problem is changing the alternator pulley. This can be tricky on the truck and/or if you don't have an impact wrench. I just took my alternator off and had someone switch them out. For reference, I used a 3 piece set from Ford Racing. The main pulley on mine took more effort than the water pump pulley, but I think mostly just because you have to do it from below. I don't experience any cooling problems. When you put the new pulleys on, use a piece of string to measure the size belt you will need. This can save trips to the parts store.

My pulleys came from Steeda, which require switching to a Mustang (6 rib) belt. Had it done in the d---e dealer where I work. Haven't noticed any difference though & if I bought another truck , wouldn't do it again. I'm interested in knowing what a lower temp thermostat does, however. My truck is listed elsewhere under ENGINES, so I won't bother here.
