Post 4.2 engine recall

A friend where I work drives a 97 with the 4.2 V6. He recently got a recall notice from Ford to have something replaced on his engine. When he took it in they found some more serious problems (I forget exactly what he said) so they are replacing his engine with a brand new one. Not bad, a new engine at 55K miles. So anyone out there who got the recall and has not gone down to the dealer, it may be worth your while. Although I'm not saying you'll get as lucky as he did.

To be honest, I did not even know there was a recall on the 4.2s. I did not see anything on this site. Plus I have the 5.4 myself.

the recall is only on the 97 4.2l engine built during a certain time frame. the timing cover gaskets are leaking coolant so contact your dealer asap to see if your truck is involved in the recall. if anyone needs to find out if their truck is under recall feel free to call me. I work at a ford dealership in the service dept. my number is (800)356-2272 ext #295. ask for albert. the v6 mustang, tbird and cougar are also involved in this recall.

another note about the recall on the 97 f150 with the 4.2L engine. if you paid for the repair before the recall program came out you are elegible for a refund of what you paid. just take your receipt to your nearest dealer and they will process a refund for you! $$$$

also, not everyone got a new engine under the recall - you only got a new engine if coolant got into the oil (?).
anyways, I got the recall work done and didn't require a new engine - atleast I hope I don't need one. if the oppurtunity did come up for a new engine I would pay the difference to swap it out w/ a v8.

I just had this repair done on April 12. On April 13 the bottom end of my motor went. The local dealership that did the work is trying to get a new motor for my truck now. Their story is that this happens with some of the motors that have this repair done. I am not sure if I buy that or not.

So if you have this repair done, be prepaired and watch your motor carefully.

I'm not up to date on any recall on the 4.2 engines, but I did see something interesting.

I was in the local Ford dealer getting some touch up paint. I was walking around and saw about 10 to 15 maybe more 1997 to 1998 F150 trucks with the hoods off and all the engines out of them. Most of them had the engines in the bed of the truck. What was so funny was that their own parts truck was in the line up with the engine out. For what it's worth something did not look right here.

I am going back later this week, I am going to see if the line up has grown or was I just seeing things.

Just some info.

it feels good to know i'm not alone!
i also got a recall on my front cover
gasket. the very day i drove it home
from the repairs, the motor started making
some god awful noise in the bottom end.
there was 47,000 on my truck. i took it
back the next day. they checked it and
said that the motor would have to be
replaced. it was replaced with a "quality
renewal" replacment engine. and it was
free of charge. it did take about 5 weeks
to get the motor though but not a bad wait
when its free. the new motor has about
1000mi. on it now and seems to be ok.

Question

Well it is somewhat done. 43 days is ALL it took. I have not yet accepted the repair officialy, I told them I was not going to sign a damn thing until I drove it for a week or two.

Only found a few things that were not put in place correctly, wire clamps and so on. It seems to be running fine I haven't put my foot into it yet.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should look for while going over this power plant further?

I plan on changing the oil at 1,000 mi. and cracking the filter already.

thanks
