smoke from Tailpipe?
I have a 2001 5.4l and lately I have noticed that when the weather is cold on start up there is a large greyish puff of smoke out the pipes and was wondering if I should be concered at all? The smoke does not resemble or smell like oil, but rather smells of unburned gas is this normal? any replies will be appreciated thaks in advance!
Oil smoke is usually blue. Smoke from a too rich condition is black. My brother in laws' 2000 buffs like yours. I've seen his and it is blueish grey and is from oil. Probably from valve guides, or a little getting around the rings.
I have noticed that my 2000 puffs out some grey smoke usually if I start it back up within a few minutes after turning it off. The inside of my tailpipe is black, along with a small ring of it on the outside at the tip. I don't know if that is normal or not.
I am running a SuperChip and K&N FIPK, if that makes a difference.

I had posted about this also. My '99 4x2 Lariat with the 5.4L does the same thing. Grey puff, rich smell from exhaust. Then it goes away pretty quick. Guess it takes the computer a minute to wake up before it controls mixture, etc. General consensus was not to worry unless it was smoking while driving. I hope so, I went out of warranty two days ago.
Since i posted the problem seems to have taken care of iself and is now just a small puff on cold start and immediatly goes away thereafter. Thanks guys for all your help the f150 online coomunity is irreplacable!
