My 4.2L has right-hand threads and the tool made the job easy. Are you sure yours are left-hand? You can tell by looking at the fan. The threads will be such that when the engine is running, it will tend to tighten the fan/clutch.

The torque to replace the fan is 47-63Nm (35-47 lbs/ft, so yes it is tight, and especially so if it has been installed for a while and gotten a little thread corrosion making it stick. Maybe just a good rap on the end of the wrench with a dead blow mallet will snap it loose.

But if the problem is that you can't get a good angle on the tools to break it loose, then try to tighten it just a little, this will break it loose and then you should be able to unscrew it.

If your looking at at the engine, turning the fan clutch nut counter clockwise will loosten the clutch. Mine took a bit of persuasion before it finally let go, you might want to get someone to help you
Good Luck

Mine was a bear, but I used two people. The fan clutch removal tool should have a 1/2" square opening in it you can attach a breaker bar to. Attach the breaker bar to the wrench that goes over the four pulley bolts. It took more time driving up to Auto Zone to rent the tool and return it than it did to remove the clutch. But two people really does help here. Also leave your serpentine belt on. It helps to hold the waterpump pully. Good luck.

When facing the truck turn the breaker bar to your left (passenger side). It took me quite some time to figure this out too.

June issue of Super Ford had a nice write up from SHM about adding mods and discovered that the service manual is wrong. It's a right handed thread !

ROUSH torque the fan towards the passenger fender. That would be to the left or counter-clockwise when facing the engine. I tapped it once with the hammer and it broke free.
I pitty you if you are trying to do this alone. Good luck.....Just remember mounting the fan and hooking it up is the easy part.
