Oil Change Tricks
Crawled under my 5.4l '00 f150 to see what I'm in for. I can not believe where the oil filter is located! I couldn't have found a worse spot if I tried! I'm looking for any tricks you use to get the filter off without making a huge mess. Anyone relocated the filter?
On my Y2K F250 SD with the 5.4L the filter is relocated right next to and above the oil drain plug.. (via a remote filter type of mechanism). Its this way from the factory.
Maybe the F150 could used something similar.

MI guy:
Welcome to the boards. I know the feeling. Had the same thought when I got mine. Cranking the wheels to the right will free up enough space to allow you to get to the filter. We're lucky. At least our newer trucks have a little collection pan with a drain notch below the filter to help direct the mess.

My filter is mounted on the frame right behind the bumper on the drivers side. I think it was part of the off road package. Real easy to change. This can probably be ordered at your "friendly" FORD dealer.

MI guy, I have the 4.6l and haven't looked under the 5.4l to see the difference. I once posted the same question, the answer I got was to turn the wheel hard right when parking it. This made a world of difference. Between that and the Fumoto valve, my last oil change only left 2 little spots of oil on the driveway instead of the contents of the filter! Good luck.

How do you like your Fumoto drain valve?. Is it made well, How easy is it to disengage and rotate the valve and does it drain out slow. Been looking at these for a while. I have my oil changed and figured if I put one of these on I wouldn't have to worry about them stripping out my drain plug.

Ended up jacking up one side of the truck to help drain out the filter as much as possible. I didn't realize that the collection plate was there and initially was wondering how the heck oil was dripping down the side of this plastic piece and not the diff. I'd think if they were smart enough to put that plate w/drain there, they could have located the filter somewhere where the plate wouldn't be needed. Anyways, jobs done with only a little mess. I'll try cranking the wheel next time. Thanks for the replies.

Hey MI guy,
As some members have stated, turning the wheels hard right will definately help. Also, they make oil filter wrenches that fit over the top of the filter and allows a rachet head to fit in the center once it's on. Then you just take the handle and turn.It helped me a great deal!
Best of luck and welcome aboard!
LoNE WoLF,
I too have the Fumoto Drain Valve and love it.... it's great! The small lever is recessed in a little groove in the lock position. To open it, all you do is lift up (there's a spring which keeps it down) and slide it over.... very easy. No runs, no drips, no errors. I definately recommend the Fumoto Drain Valve.

LoNE WoLF and all, I really like my Fumoto Valve, I think Lariat Ryder stated it well. I'm thank Andthensometoo for suggesting it to me, I got the one with the nipple on it.
As for it draining slow, I was able to change the oil without ANY tools! I did not have to get tools out, clean them up, put them away, nor clean up the driveway or scrub the oil off my hands. So, maybe it did drain a little slow, but in the long run the whole job was faster. There is a link to the FumotoValve manufacturer in my Sig above.

Here is some info on oil filters and he differance in the brands. Pretty good site http://minimopar.simplenet.com/oilfi...y.html#pl30001
Well, I had the same thought when I changed out the factory fill (nasty greenish crap) at 200 miles. But, after careful wrigging around, I found I can lay in front of the drivers front wheel facing the back of the truck and reach right up over the diff to the oil filter with my left hand. I loosen it with a filter cap wrench then remove it by hand. It's easy once you figure out how to slide the filter in and out. Any leaks are collected by the plastic piece.
