If Not-man realy did have a 4.6 and a 5.4 2000 F150 he would sell the puppy not the bad boy!! How convenient to try and stuff your point down someone mouth then to claim to own both and want to sell the other one. I don't buy it!!!!! All the problems with the v-8 of the year. Bite me. All you 4.6 owners go out and drive the 5.4 then come back and talk smack. If you want to get technical there have not been all that many problems with the 5.4. Remember the 4.6 was subject to the slap. And the fact that only windsor motors were prone means they know what was the matter! Bad parts. There gone!! Now the leak had a small and I mean tiny amount of units with a casting flaw on the block!!! Now for all you 4.6 owners with buyers remorse please repeat after me.... Bigger is better period! Go dump on some chevys and leave big brother alone!

RR
I do indeed own both and if you don't believe me, I don't give a damn. If I came across as trying to shove my point down peoples throat, that was not my intention and I apologize.
Also note that I am not knocking the 5.4 for its power, Its got plenty and like you say bigger is better. The other things that I mentioned are merely very obvious facts. If you call piston slap and a casting flaw in the block minor problems then I don't even want to know what your idea of a major one is! Ford does NOT replace engines for minor problems.
BTW, the reason I am selling my '00 is because I can sell it for much more than I paid for it, for reasons I will not explain here.
I can see that you get cranky when someone picks on your "badboy" 5.4, but theres no need to get all jacked up.

P.S RR I do have something else that I could shove down your throat.

Just look at all the mods ppl are doing to the 4.6L to get the power up to the 5.4L
For what they spend in mods they could have bought the 5.4L in the first place.
If you plan on getting the 4.6L DON'T plan on modifing it, just get the 5.4L upfront.

Question

CDA, How did your truck drive in the snow when you went skiing? Do you have a 4X2 or 4X4? I am curious, I would think the way the weight is distributed in a Supercrew that a 4X2 will drive quite well in the snow.

Ok, are we talking about whose truck is faster, or are we talking about helping ISU choosing an engine?

If were on the topic of a fast truck, the 4.6l gets the job done, hands down. Passing is not a problem, I can peel out like theres no tommorrow. Ford just needs to fix the lame shifting, thats the only problem I have.

Sorry 'bout the previous posts. I have no Idea what happened and it won't let me delete them.

Anyway, back to my question.

What is the price diff between the 4.6 and the 5.4??

If memory serves, when I got mine, I think I paid about $1,400 for the 5.4 over the 4.2 V6, and about $800 for the 5.4 over the 4.6.

Over the length of my note, it added $15-$20/mo. Not that big a deal for me. I do believe I'll get most of that money back on the resale.

As far as gas milage, I'm getting 15.5 mpg right now and I haven't heard of many people getting much better than that w/ the 4.6.

For me the decision was simple. It was a small price to pay to get the added power w/ the 5.4.

I have the 5.4L. No problems at all. I can't really compare a 4.6L since I never even test drove one. I can't imagine having less power in this truck though, that would suck. Get the big engine, you won't regret it.

EDITED:
BTW the build date on my 5.4 engine is 11/99

notirT, Talk about cranky!! Who on the planet has enough money for 2 smagy trucks? You da man! As for your offer, don't they have any girls on your side of the boarder? I wish I had the time to research the number of 5.4 motors (I'm sure a million or three) that were produced with the oil leak or slap vrs without. The leak was over a few month period and the slap is one percent of units produced in a certain time frame. And maybe Ford's fixing them cause they really do give a _hit. It seems very minor when your not directly involved. When publications started calling the 5.4 "V8 of the year" etc. it was because of innovation and predicted and noted (because this award has come for three years) realiability. Now I remember when this award came across this site some 4.6 owners were miffed because their motor was not a "ten best of the year" and maybe rightfully so. I don't know what to tell you!! All this aclaim and the fact that we are driving these bad boys every day and know how well they perform and you can't figure out why we get cranky when you 4.6 owners dump on our powerplant? If the problem was a little more wide spread and Ford was not fixing them you would have a better argument. And I know why you can sell the 2000 Truck for so much money!! 5.4 need I say more! Please do the math there are almost a million good ones for every bad and the bad get fixed. There is nothing better than driving a big truck with power on demand!! You want it and it's there.

David L,

I have a 2X4 SuperCrew with limited slip but, unfortunately didn't get a chance to test it on snow as the roads were clear (Mammoth Mtn, California). However, there is a definite improvement in the traction department compared to my 98 F150 2X4 shortbed. I use to keep a few sandbags in the bed of the 98' to help with traction but don't need them in the SCrew - most likely due to the added weight closer to the rear wheels. I think it would do well in snow.

Cool

LSU,

Go with the 5.4. If you ever need the power you will have it.

Thumbs up

You got to go with the 5.4L. And the SuperCrew F150 5.4L is the hotest thing going. If I didn't need the bed space for my bikes, I would have gotten the SuperCrew. But with the Expedition, I have the extra cab space. But let's talk engines. I have the 5.4L in both my road worriors. Just as you would when you shop for a new house (if you're in to track homes), get the biggest on the block. That way you won't ever have to kick yourself for getting less. The newer 4.6's are great. With the boost in HP, they have almost the power of my older 5.4L. I pull bikes and Sea Doos and love the power when on the road. Since I only test drove the 4.6 and never owned one, I can't compare it from a long term experience. But, I know I felt the difference when I drove it. I haven't had any problems with either of my 5.4's nor have any of my friends. And I have plenty of friends that have both old and new 5.4 F150's and Expos. For the little extra bucks and the fact that if you do have a problem Ford will fix it, it should allow you to make the right choice. If you don't, you'll regret it later. A SuperCrew should be a SuperTruck with a SuperEngine. Get the bang for your buck and know that it will payoff even more when you trade or sell.
