Lower MPG when computer is in learn mode?
After disconnecting the battery, the computer must "re-learn" - could this cause my gas mileage to decrease while the computer is in "re-learn" mode on my '97 5.4? Also - does the computer only "re-learn" after battery power is taken away or is it constantly in "learning" mode??

In my opinion, I would say YES your mileage will drop ever so slightly while it relearns. Optimum fuel economy should return in a few hundred miles after it completes the relearn process.
The computer in our trucks is in a constant learn cycle. When the battery power is removed...it clears out the 'memory' of how it has been driven and then must relearn over a period of several hundred miles.
The computer in the 2000 models also controls the transmission...and it must learn shift patterns ('adaptive strategy') and how it is being used by the owner.
The VERY best person to ask is MIKE TROYER in the Computer chips section. Mike is on the ball with questions like this!!
