Angry Detonation on 1997 4.6L

Has anyone out there had a detonation problem resolved by a dealer, or otherwise?

My first warranty complaint was dealt with by removing the octane bar sensor, which removed most of the detonation, along with alot of the engines power, and fuel efficiency. My freeway gas mileage dropped from 16-17mpg, to 13-14mpg.

I think this procedure is masking a more important underlying problem, while causing a few of it's own.

I have tried multiple grades of fuel from several better rated brands, I find Texaco is better, in my opinion.

I also notice the piston slap at colder startups from 5 to 15 seconds, and wonder if it may be related. I just hate to rely on the dealer, if someone can suggest what has worked for them.
I will suggest that the original power level, and efficiency of the engine be restored, and that they try something different, before my warranty expires. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Would you happen to know what your computer code is? I believe the FOU1 programming has a known pinging problem. Seems this program was designed for a much lighter truck.

Rick, I can relate to your problem and can understand how you might feel. Did you try using Chevron Tectron FI cleaner? It has worked wonders. Also do a search on this topic and there might be some help there>

Rick, Sorry, but I also got it (pinging).
Infact, from day one. Tryed all the additives. As my kids say, "dad the motors sparking". Yet the dealer (service guys) dont here it. 3yrs & 3 different dealers -no help! Yes, 93oct helps. But with a 5sp every gear gets shifted at 4500. About 3500 the ping starts. Even just normal driving at hwy speed 5th/60mph theres a light ping.
Love Ford, But man this ping sucks !!!

Changed the plug, also no dif. Heck, the thing sucks gas. You think it was running rich, not lean. There got to be a fix.

One more note: Was at the Sebring 12hr Race and filled up with 100oct-ul. Then ran the buttons-off-of-it. NO PING. But 5.50 a gal.

I am trying the Chevron FI cleaner today. Tomorrow the dealer should reconnect the octane shorting bar, if I cannot find it today. Anyoine know what it looks like, or where it is?

I found my MAF sensor turned to the side. I cleaned it with an alcohol swab, and repositioned it to better sense the passing air flow. I also inspected the Motorcraft platinum plugs, and was alarmed to find a non conductive coating on the plug connector. The high voltage of the ignition system does make it though this barrier, however, I prefer a clean electron transfer and cleaned them up with steel wool.

I will post my perceived and measured results shortly.
