Post Adaptive Computer

This is a great board. Lots of good stuff, but one thing I have read much about is the adaptive computer in these trucks. How 'bout some light on the subject.

How long does it take to adapt.
Does it keep adapting or stop.
What types of things are modified in the process (ie, shift point, spark advance, ???)

Welcome to the site. You will find many well informed people here that are willing to share with you.
The way I understand it the computer learns how you dirve and it may take a few days to a couple of weeks. I guess if you want the most performance from your engine drive it harder. If you disconnect the battery for some reason the computer starts the learning curve all over again.

Those that have added a Superchips have commented that after a couple of weeks the most improvement is evident. On mine I pulled the chip and felt the loss right away. I put the chip back in as soon as I fixed my other problem.

The system is always adapting for varying conditions (TP, MLP, VSS, MAF...etc).

If the lookup tables are erased by disconnecting the battery, it can take up to 2 or 3 weeks to see the full benefit (relearn).

If you replace a part like the AirAid, it should flow better, so it is a good idea to do this. It will actually speed up the process of learning.

Timing, injector pulse width, IAC %, and shift points are modified.

On page 135 of my 2000 owners manual, it mentions the adaptive learning of the computer for the transmission. My 98 did not have this feature (not mentioned in owners manual)...and I don't think the 99's do either. It states:

"To account for customer driving habits and conditions, your automatic transmission electronically controls the shift quality by using an adaptive learning strategy. The adaptive learning strategy is maintained by power from the battery. When the battery is disconnected or a new battery is installed, the transmission must relearn its adaptive strategy. Optimal shifting will resume within a few hundred kilometers (miles) of operation."
