I have a 97 F-150 4X4 ORP w 5 speed. The problem: While accelerating the vehicle “bucks” (much like not all of the cylinders are firing but not sure if that is the problem). I changed the fuel filter and added injector cleaner I changed the wires 1 year ago. I put new spark plugs in it about 2 to 3 yrs ago (champions). The vehicle has 95,000 miles and the hesitation only occurs usually during the 2nd gear and up. I am currently changing the spark plugs to determine if that is the problem. I was told that it might be the fuel pump going bad. I could see how this might be the problem. If it is the fuel pump has anyone replaced one and how difficult is it to do? Another question is what is the best brand to buy for a fuel pump. I’m looking for quality and performance. I will probably do some form of modification to it the future.

I would do plugs and wires first, then onto check the coil packs, then the fuel filter, then O2 sensos. Should catch it by then, but try in that order.

What you need is a data stream reader and recorder.. But then again you have to know what it is you are reading. My suggestion is instead of just replacing parts I would take it to a well known guy that you trust and let him plug into ol Fred and read whats a matter with it .. Becareful there are a lot of shotty guys out there though.. I have access to scanners so I guess thats my benefit of being an auto teacher LOL .. Good luck to ya.. An just for you FYI dont rule out a bad egr causing that surging or even a dead spot in the TPS.. Good luck my friend.....

Well that sort of sounds like the smae problem I am having with my 97 except mine is the 4.6 automatic with about 130000 miles on it.
Let me guess vehicle feels like it is surgung or maybe missing and then picks right back up. Mine only does this at a steady throttle. If I give it a little more gas it takes off and runs fine all the way up to WOT and at 4500 RPM it does it again and I have the usual pinging that I have been getting above 4500 RPM.
I thought about how carbon would cause my problems but could not put it all togther. I think it is a fuel delivery problem or a spark problem but if it is either one of them it should throw a could, right?. I haven't even ruled out the fact it may be the trans. God, I am lost on this one and hate to pay dealer 100 bucks to say sir but the truck ran fine for us.
