Question New 4.6/Wrong Dipstick?

Just got my new 2000 4.6 installed in my 99. It came as a complete hot tested engine direct from the Romeo plant. Here's my situation - My original 4.6 had the cable type dipstick. The new engine has a stell ribbon type with the spiral shaped end. When I changed oil with the original engine, I added exactly 6 Qts per the OM and it filled it to the mark. I just changed the oil for the first time in the new engine, added 6 Qts, and the level was below the add mark. I have the towing package so I thought that may be where the quart goes, and it isn't clear in the OM as to any difference in oil capacity with the Class III towing group. I've searched past threads and this isn't discussed much.

Is there a part number stamped on the dipstick anywhere? How can I tell if I'm overfilling the engine? BTW I'm using Mobil-1 5W30.

Johnnyquest they changed from the cable design because it did not give good readings. The marker at the end of the cable has a hard time going through the bend in the dipstick holder, which would rub off the oil from the marking point. And as far as I know all the tritons use 6 Qts. Hope this helps....

The new engine was ordered by the dealer to correct what started out as noisy lifters (lash adjusters). The tech replaced all 8 lash adjusters on the pass side and created a n EXXON Valdez oil leak in the process that they couldn't seem to correct (it's a really lomg, painful story that I won't go into here). At that point, the problem suddenly "transformed" into a "rod knock". Personally, I think the tech was basically clueless and the dealer didn't know what else to do. It took two months for the Romeo plant to call them back, but I think that my persistent calling and bugging the service manager and the hotline helped get things done.

Bottom line is I got a new 4.6 engine right off the Romeo assembly line out of the deal, but I think it took 12 months off my life expectancy in the process.

Here's my best suggestion... Put in the recommended six quarts, start it up, shut it off, and let it sit for about 10 minutes. Pull the dipstick and see where the level is. This is your full level. The dipstick is just a guide. Six quarts is six quarts. If for some reason, on down the line, the engine oil level gets too low, it will trigger the low oil level switch in the pan long before any damage occurs. Variations in the oil level are normal from car to car, and at different angles that the vehicle sits at. I'm rambling. I'll shut up now.
