Don't 'know' about them being the same internally, but the K&N Gold has a 1" 'nut' on the bottom of the 'can' so removal is certain and easier.

Re: Cool! Another oil thread!

Just my opinion. Nothing against the synthetics, as we'll all be using it sometime, when all the dino oil is gone. And since I put 3k miles on my truck every two months, I'm using my share of the stuff!
Mitch,

You are correct. While I am an advocate of synthetics and use Mobil 1 all the time many here may not go back as far as I do regarding driving and oil changes. Many of us used the petroleum based oils for years without a problem before synthetics became available and popular.

I believe the most important thing is to faithfully change oil and filters on an a prompt schedule, whether you go by miles or time and whether you use a synthetic or petroleum oil. They only difference for me now that I am off factory warranty is that I will go to 4 month intervals rather than 3 using Mobil 1. I only have 19,000 miles on my truck in 37 months so I fall into the catagory of "severe" driving conditions of short run, stop-and-go.

I suspect with me using Mobil 1 since my first oil change just makes me feel and sleep better but I certainly wouldn't condemn someone who changes their oil faithfully using a petroleum based oil.

As far as oil filters go, I cannot comment on those high priced filters. I use the recommended Ford Motorcraft FL820S which I can find on sale many times for about $3.50 and they always have a high evaluation rating. I am not about to buy $10 filters only to throw them away after 3 or 4 months with an oil change.

Mobil 1 makes a 5w-20 oil aswell. Where I live 6 quarts is about $26.00. As far as the filters go here atleast the Mobil1 is about $10.00 and the K&N is $14.00. I change mine with Mobil1 5w20 every 5,000 miles and have used the Mobil1 filter so far although it is a lot more difficult to get a grip on than the K&N. I personally think Mobil1 at 5,000 miles would offer every bit as much protection and possibly more than dyno oil at 3,000 miles and it's nice to not have to change your oil quite as often. Can't comment on all the advantages that have been listed in previous threads, but I did definately notice an extra 20-30 miles per tank on a constant basis after changing over. Only other advantage I really noticed is it seems like the engine runs slightly smoother at high speeds at or over 80 mph.

just my 2 cents!

Thumbs up Dunbarton:

Exactly. I too, just use the Motorcraft filter too. Since changing oil is just about the only maintenance thing left to do one these new engines, I still like getting my "weekend mechanic" hands dirty every now and then. So the extra oil changes are a welcome time for me!
