Question To warranty or not to warranty

I have been a member for only a short time and found a lot of usefull and disheartening information on web site.

My question is that with fords problems with piston slap, oil leaks and crack doors, to name the biggies, should I invest the $1000 for the 6/60 extended warranty? It is by far hard to find a service department that is on your side.

My engine build date is 9/3/99.

Your suggestions are appreciated.

Anyone in PGH PA know of a good Ford service department?

First let's clear something up. For a 1000 your buying a 3/24 warranty.

I know, it sounds less painful when you call it a 6/60.

If you do decide it's for you, skip any vacation plans to Vegas, you wouldn't have any fun there.

(and watch out for Ford man)

If you buy FORD you buy an extended warranty, PERIOD!

I am VERY glad I purchased an extended bumper to bumper warranty out to 5 years 75K... Its already saved me THOUSANDS!!!!!!!

Rear wiper motor replaced, TWICE! ($300 X 2=$600)

Engine replaced for piston slap. ($5000 +)

New engine leaked oil, TWICE (probably woulda been free)

Thats about,oh.... $5600 give or take a few hundred!!!!!!!!!!

Hmmmmmmmmmmm....I spent $1000 and got $5600.... Sounds like a GREAT investment!

If we where talking about a Toyota, I would say DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY on a warranty! They build great vehicles!

When you buy American cars, you buy a warranty!

I got the 6year/100k mile warranty. I too have had just too much happen with American-built cars to think that I won't be in before that point. At worst, it'll make a great selling point. I also get a free rental.
I would see if your dealer would throw in free oil changes if you bought the warranty... looking back, the whole purchasing experience (my first from a dealer) was a little dizzying (tired and frustrated with sharing a self-destructing oldsmobile with my wife for two years.). Just tell 'em to **** off when they try to sell you the 'life' insurance.

Sometimes you are like Rand and VERY glad you bought the warranty..other times you find out that you were lucky enough to make it past the extended warranty period without a single problem. This is a tough decision to make.

The experts recommend that if it is a proven..reliable vehicle..skip the extended warranty..as more often than not..it will prove to not be worth it. (experts being Consumer Reports, Kelly Blue Book and others who rate vehicles).

I did not get the extended warranty on either my previous 98 F-150 or now the 2000 F-150. In fact, I have never purchsed an extended warranty on any vehicle I have owned.

I used to never buy extended warranties on ANYTHING. But now, my family tends to keep cars longer. Last truck was seven years. Wife's car was six years. Did not have the warranties on those and wish we had. We both got new or almost new vehicles in past few months. Went for the extended warranties this time because we know we will be keeping them quite a while. We also bought extentions on the new cars our sons took to college because we wanted them to get through school without big bills on cars.
Just like any other kind of insurance, it's a gamble. You buy life insurance to protect your family. You hope they never get to cash it in, but it's nice to know it's there!

We have in the past purchased extended warranties on vehicles we have purchased. Our thinking was, we took out the loans for longer than the factory warranty was valid, and if anything drastic would happen we would be hard pressed to repair the vehicle and still be making monthly payments. The flip side to this is my wife keeps cars a very short time, but both of her extended warranties were voided at trade in time and she was reimbursed, but it was pro-rated(still made out pretty well there).I guess I have to go along with others and say its basically a crap shoot,ya never know what may go wrong and if you want protection against some serious problems a warranty(although pretty expensive) may come in handy. But i'll know first hand come tomorrow, the wife's Mustang needs some service so we'll see just how valuable her warranty is,I'll keep ya posted..

Waste of money. Sounds like Rand's dealer's just replacing things without finding the cause of the problem. Thought the piston slap item was supposed to be a TSB issue, not warranty. Sounds like that dealer's just half-assing things to keep you coming back since they know there's a guaranteed paycheck with the warranty. If you have that kind of money to burn, why not do like dirt bike dave's suggestion and invest the money in something and get a return.

Hey everyone. I purchased a esp contract on my truck when I bought it new. Being that I work in a dealership I have seen extended warranties save numerous people money. I haven't used it yet because I'm still in my 3/36. But it will be nice down the road. I would purchase an esp contract next time I buy a vehicle.

Here's my two cents...

I've had Geico Auto Insurance for over 7 years. They offer a program called Mechanical Breakdown Coverage. It costs $23 every 6 months and covers the entire car after your manufacturer warranty runs out. It's bumper to bumber. The catch is it has a $250 deductable - so it's used sparingly. They used to offer up to 100,000 miles - no matter how many years it took you to get there - as long as you pay the $23 every 6 months (this is the plan we have on our Quest). Now they cut it off at 7 years or 100,000 miles. Really pi@@@@ed me off. I still signed up though.

To me, it's the best of both worlds. The initial and ongoing costs are MINIMAL, and if I do need to cover a BIG ticket item after warranty, I'm only out $250.

We used it on our 1995 Quest recently (at 63,000 miles). Had the motor mounts replaced, EGR valve, fuel pump, throttle position sensor, and a door lock motor. All this cost us only $250. The dealer invoice was close to $1,300.

FORD MAN:

So your saying that because the Piston Slap has a TSB my warranty should not even be involved? I had 49K on my Expedition when they replaced the engine. I gave them a copy of the TSB. I was charged $50 because my extended warranty has a $50 deductable for each problem. Are you saying that because Ford sent out this TSB warranty doesn't matter and I should get my $50 back?

Interesting!

That's how I understood it, the TSB was supposed to cover you on that. There are also "goodwill" adjustments available on items. Usually you have to get nasty to get those.

Cool

I had a warrenty on my Toyota (Rand: even toyota makes some lemons ) The engine blew up at 40k. Cost me $30 But that's the only time in all my many cars and trucks that I've ever used the warrenty!!! This time I've decided to start up a savings account and fore-go the warrenty. I figure that after saving for 3 years while this truck is still on the 3yr 36kmile warrenty that I'll have enough to cover just about anything that happens after that.

I've got a '97 with 79K on it. I bought it used with 50K and didn't blink an eye when I was offered an after market warranty for 5yr/50K. It cost about $1000 or so. Since then I've had the timing cover and gasket replaced $900 (before TSB issued), new electric mirrors on both sides and new multi-switch ~$450, and rear differential seal replaced and fluid added (I forget $). Anyway...my advice...you see the posts...it's piece of mind, and I think the odds are you will need it eventually.
