Question Ford 99 5.4L Triton Engines

I want to know if anyone else is having problems with bad head gaskets on the 5.4L
Triton motors. I've had mine for only
15000 miles and already they are telling me
that head gaskets have to be replaced. A
friend of mine has the same motor in his Expedition with the same problem.

See the message I posted several weeks ago.
Ford apparently had problems with the machining of the top of the blocks and they are leaking oil. Affects some 4.6 & 5.4L blocks manufactured in '98-'99. They are having to replace the blocks. Head gaskets may not solve the problem. (This info. seems to be reliable since I heard it a from Service Mgr. at large Ford dealer in NJ, who has a 4.6L Expedition and is waiting for a new engine.)

I Thank you for a quick reply :^) I have looked at the previous thread and was quite impressed with the comments. My only problem is that my warranty expires soon and I feel that they are going to stall on this issue.
So I'm really hard pressed on making sure that this get fixed. I also was told by the factory rep. that they have "redisgned gaskets" to fix it now. So I have printed out all the material here and am taking it into my dealer. Thanks again.

I have a 1999 F150 w/5.4L engine. It started leaking oil from the head gaskets at 18000 miles. Servicing dealer was going to replace the head gaskets, but have instead ordered a new engine. They were very evasive when I asked them about similar problems with other Triton engines. They claimed its the first one they have seen with this problem. I have spoke with other owners who are having trouble with leaking head gaskets in my area.
Build date of engine is 3/25/99. Windsor,Ont.

ultra33,
Similar observation: I have mentioned the roof crack problem and door crack problem to several FORD dealers in the area..and each one has said they have "never heard of these problems". Sounds like the 'corporate response' to known problems.

Best of luck to all with the oil leaks! I am certainly keeping my eye on my 5.4L, just in case!!

I think it would be a great idea for everyone who is having problems to list their build dates(located on the drivers side valve cover..the white sticker)...this way, we can sort of make an educated guess as to what to expect. 'ML' posted a great write up on the piston slap problem not long ago..and he was able to narrow down a time line this way.

Dustoff: you are very intuitive: very good
problem solving technique in light of absence of help from FORD... If a relationship can be found you hve a far greater chance of getting something done.
My 99 5.4 only has 1500miles so far. I WILL
be watching!

Unhappy

1999, f250ld XLT super cab, 5.4 10-27-98, First noticed leak in head gasket on right side at +/- 22,000 miles. The dealer claims they ordered the gaskets 4 wks ago and it is taking so long because there is such a demand for them. I'm still waiting but will now question the trueness of the block.

First noticed leak at 18000 miles. Waiting for dealer to replace engine when it arrives. Since I know I,m getting a new engine I have been beating the hell out of the original to see what will happen. Truck now has 25000 miles and the leak is worse than ever. Hope the new engine arrives before the old one runs out of oil.
Engine build date 3/25/99 Windsor,Ont
