Question Speed Limitor

Ive heard other people say there was a speed limitor on the F150s But I have had mine on the interstate doing atleast 120 and still gaining speed that was before chip was installed. I dont know if maybe the previous owner took it off or what the deal was.

Thumbs up

Must be a Lightning, cut off is 140 mph. Never heard of any other "stock" F-150 running that fast and your speedo should only show 100, how did you clock this speed?

My speedo only goes to 100 so, I just take my brother-in-law along. His screams are in concert with said speed.
The octave he hit indicated 112mph.

Using the accelerator I can make him sound just like a siren.

mine only goes around 95-100. With a hypertech powerprogramer III, you can adjust the speed limit. Dont know if any other chips will or not. What speed are your tires rated for, just kinda wondering.

Cool

HI!... So far all I've been able to get for a top speed is 137MPH, but then again I'm not stock and I do have a SUPERCHIP!

Well...I was on the Beltway here in Houston a few weeks back. And accidently got up to 95mph before I stopped day dreaming and brought it back down. I won't be driving my truck that fast anyway, plus I am sure my General tires are not rated over 80mph. Oh well.

Talking 95mph @ 2750 rpm

On the way to DC this past summer, my stock '98 5.4 4x4 was doing 95 at 2750 rpm and EASILY could have gone faster if the traffic would cooperate. I don't know what the limiter is set at but it had plenty of ummph left in reserve to give me a woody.
And the gas mileage was better averaging 87mph than the 67mph I averaged on the return trip. Dont remember exact numbers but the way up was about 19 mpg.

Hello Everyone,

The normal top speed limiter runs about 98 mph in these 1997 & up F-150's, with a few being able to hit as much as 108 mph. Non-Lightning F-150's will not hit close to 120 mph on the factory ECU program, as the ts limiter is well below that speed. This is easily removed with a Superchip in most cases.

Mentioning what speeds tires are rated for is a *very* good idea, I was very happy to see talked about as well in this thread. A brief spurt up to 90 mph you can get away with, but any kind of sustained triple-digit speeds require better tires, to say nothing of not being very practical on public roads.

Have fun & be safe,

Talking My two bits...

well i guess that mine stops at 108 cause it pull hard in all gears and fast past 100...them boom....govener.....I like to cruise around 90 in the truck, but if you do alot of high speed driving in your truck then, for your sake and everyone elses put about ummm 1000 dollars into the suspension, sway bars, rancho 9000's, 3500lb helpersprings, polyurethene bushings....It makes a huge difference....

If mine has a speed limiter it is set for way over 100m.p.h.
I have buried the speedo needle and continued to pick up speed on a few occasions and never experienced anything that felt like a governor. The only thing that stopped acceleration was my foot lifting off the throttle. And I have NO SUPERCHIP.....Yet

I had mine up to 100 once a few months ago I was on a 2 lane highway going about 70 in a 55 come onto this old Comaro 79 to 81 Z28 style well he is doing about 50 in a 55 and traffic is giving me no break to pass this jerk so I get to about a foot from his rear trying to get him to get going then he punches it I do the same he lets off around 80 and I get right back on him he punches it again this time he gets up to 100 or so as he pulled away a little when I hit 100 he backs off and hits his brakes as he figured he couldn't out run me I was hoping he would have kept going so I could have found the speed limiter as I knew I was near it.

Just think how many flips or rolls you could do with those Firestone tires. The judge from USA would probably give you a 10 for all the flips and rolls and a 1 for landing. Total 5.5 you lose. Just kidding.

I had mine to what I believed was about 115, with the OD off and a chip. I was showing off for a friend, like a dummy, lol. I probably won't do it again, but it was a rush At least my tires are rated for it, I can tell by how much they overcharged me. All kidding aside, they are Yokahama AVS/ST's and I can't wait til these noisy suckers wear out!!,,,,,98
