Post 5.4 concerns

1) I am looking to buy a 1997 expedition with a 5.4 in it. Can somebody give me a summary on the HP/Torque ratings of the 4.6 and 5.4L engines in 1997 and what they are for 2000. 2) I understand there was an increase in hp/torque sometime in 1999 but I am not sure when in 1999, can you go by id on valve cover?. 3) Also along with this HP/Torque increase in 1999 - did MPG decrease versus the 1997 engines?? Thanks in advance

1997 (from the brochure):
4.6L- 215HP@4400rpm / 290ft-lbs@3250rpm
5.4L- 230HP@4250rpm / 325ft-lbs@3000rpm

1999 (the 'net):
4.6L- 240HP@4750rpm / 293ft-lbs@3500rpm
5.4L- 260HP@4500rpm / 350ft-lbs@2500rpm

2000 (the 'net):
4.6L- 215HP@4500rpm / 290ft-lbs@3250rpm
5.4L- 260HP@4500rpm / 350ft-lbs@2500rpm

The above numbers are for all units of the given production year. I know of no "mid-year" change-overs. Note the power decrease in the 4.6L for 2000. Mileage changes were, at most, 1mpg in either direction. Either way, it's not very good. In fact, if you are even thinking about economy, I'd recommend that you DO NOT buy an Expedition. You'll be disappointed. We absolutely love our X, but you have to get numb to stopping for 30 gallons of gas every 400 miles.
