Oil mark on dipstick?
After an oil and filter change my oil level mark on dipstick is in the middle between min. and max.. 6 qts.. Looks like there is room for more oil. Where is your's? Would filling it to max. hurt? I've parked in several level looking places and it indicates the same everytime.

In the middle is perfect. It doesn't have to be at the max line.
Now, if anybody can tell me how to make it easier to see the oil level line on the stick, I'd really appreciate it. You know, in the days of thick 30W oil, it was easy to see the level on the stick. Now that we're using super thin 5W oil, it's damned hard to see!

In my 2000 Ranger after I changed the oil and refilled to specs the level read less than half. So be it!

The oil level was hotly debated a couple of years ago and it was decided that so long as it was between the Min. and Max. marks, it was okay. We all agreed that it was a major mistake to overfill the crankcase. So, keeping it below the Max fill mark is probably the prudent thing to do.

Read your owner's manual. It states 6 quarts regardless of where it shows on the dipstick. It is very clear about this.
The dipstick is only a guide.

@ 6 qts. my dip stick reads right on the low mark never more never less and it stays there until the next oil change, even though she smokes on morning starts.

After changing the oil & filter and using 6 qts of oil, mine always reads just barely above the halfway point between Add & Full.

I noticed, some of you if not all have the trailer tow package with the oil cooler. That is where your oil is going missing. I have a 95 GMC with tow package and oil cooler and have the same problem just reversed. Every time the garage changes oil, they add exactly the amount specified (4.7 litres), however since the are in a rush, the oil cooler does not drain completely and after refilling 4.7 litres there is usually 0.5 literes/0.5 quart to much in there. I think the way that Ford has installed their oil cooler it must drain all together and when you refill the specified amount then it is not enough.

The 98 5.4L F-150 I had before this one did not have the towing package or oil cooler...and the oil was also right in the middle between the add and full mark.
