Angry Does anyone smell burnt oil?

I have a 99 F150 4X4 with the 5.4L engine. Sometimes when I run it hard it has a faint smell of burnt oil.

There are no visible signs of leaks anywhere.

Nothing (yet) with mine. Check to make sure your oil filter is on tight. I have already noticed that I have to tighten my oil filter an extra half turn..otherwise it will leak..which *could* possibly hit the exhaust.

My 98 5.4L did not require as tight of a fit as this new truck.

Take the truck to your dealer for warranty repair. There have been some problems with minor leaks from the head gasket, or even the head, that drip onto the exhaust manifold. You don't see it drip to the ground, but sometimes you can smell the burnt oil. My dealer service manager said the fix is usually a new head gasket, sometimes head replacement is required.

Thumbs down

My buddy had his 5.4l engine replaced in his 99 4x4 SC because oil was leaking from cracks in the block
This was/is a manufacturing defect. His leaked on the rear of the block and dripped on his driveway. If it drips onto the exhaust system, you will smell burnt oil.
Get the dealer to fix this ASAP under warrenty.

Thanks guys. I hope it is not that serious. I have looked around under the hood, but I haven't found any oil (none in my driveway either). I guess I will bring it in and get it checked.

As I discovered from flying helicopters...the source of leaks can sometimes be hard to find..even when you know it is leaking!

Best of luck!

I have heard there is a type of oil that has a dye in it that will show under a black light. I think that the Powerstrokes come with this in it.

Ask at ford if this oil is available and maybe try it for a few thousand to see if you might have a leak.

Hope this helps.

Yes. You can actually buy that fluorecent die in a powder or liquid form to add. It comes under several names such as LeakDtect or some such. But then you need the black light.

Thanks everybody. I hope this problem is not major. I have always been a ford man but I tried a Z-71 and had nothing but problems. I had even more problems with the dealership. It seems like everytime I brought it in I had to lay a cursing on them to get them to fix it. I guess I will find out what ford is made of when I bring it in.

By the way, I also owned a 97 Dodge 4x4 Dually extended cab with the diesel. I never had to do anything to that truck. The only reason I traded it in is because I have always been a ford man.

Barlitz, how do you like the superchip for your truck and how much did it cost.

Again thanks everybody.

I have the same truck and problem. It was a leaky head gasket. It took 5 and 1/2 weeks to get repaired due to a shortage of head cover bolts. Apparently this is a major problem for Ford on this engine and others. The Wall St. Journal has an article about this in the 3/7/00 edition. The dealership did provide a vehicle for me to use for the entire time they had my truck.

Erusset did you have the same burning oil smell with your truck before the head gasket had to be replaced.Imoore69 the chip is a definate worthwhile investmant you do have to use premium fuel but its worth it in performance, check out the superchip section.
