Clicking injector?
Last week I was alerted to a clicking noise coming from my truck that varied w/ engine speed. Using a broom handle as a stethescope I got the best transfer of sound from....an injector? What is going on with it? I didn't know they clacked like that. OH yeah....what can I expect the part to cost? Thanx.
Your injectors are really not much more than solenoids that pass fluid. As such, when they open and close, they "click". This is normal. If one starts to click louder than the others, this could be due to a poor electrical connection or the injector getting clogged, or otherwise subjected to more load than the others. If one is clogged, the others are in jeopardy as well, and should be professionally cleaned or replaced, depending on mileage. I would make sure the electrical connection at the injector is clean and tight, and if that didn't solve the problem, either replace the set of injectors (if vehicle had over 100k miles) or find a repair facility with a MotorVac system and have the induction system cleaned (if vehicle had less than 100k miles). You may have to resort to going to a Ford dealer to find a shop with a MotorVac system, but that is the only true way to thoroughly clean them (it also cleans the fuel rails and the combustion chambers). You can expect to pay $50+ per injector (plus labor) for replacement, or about half that much to have the system cleaned with a Motorvac.

Being a solenoid as previously mentioned, they should click, but not loud enough to be heard from the cabin or even over the fan with the hood up for that matter. The fuel injectors for my 5.4 from Autozone were $65. You will need new o-rings for that injector also. Mine didn’t come w/o-rings. They were another 10 for the set.
I too appear to have the clicking injector problem. I purchased a stethoscope and the problem is the worst on the back 2 injectors on the passenger side. The noise only occurs under load and does not matter what temperature is or how long the motor has been running. At idle or coasting the noise does not appear to happen. I'm curious if the cleaning would make a difference at $100 for the Motorvac system, or for twice the amount of a cleaning go with new injectors. What would happen if I disconnect the injectors one at a time (electrical connection) and start the truck to see if the noise is affected - will I damage anything?
