Cool

I like what I'm seeing here. Those seem like very big HP jumps. I may just keep my 98 and wait out the 2003. Forget buying a 2001, I need more more horses.

I think those figures are somewhere "near" today's Lightning's figures...

Hmmm...

AAAAAAAAAAAAWWW! You mean I have to wait 3 MORE YEARS for a new truck? Dangit! I was looking to order one in a few years. Guess I'll wait.

p.s. Is it the intake or the exhuast that gets an additional valve?

A returnless fuel system looks like an interesting idea. The present FI systems use a "shunt" regulator. It takes fuel at a higher pressure, bleeds off what it doesn't need at the moment, to a return line. So all the costs of the fuel return system are there. In contrast,a series regulator would deliver the fuel pressure needed at the moment, but without a return line. Sounds like they may be figuring out how to design a series regulator that also uses engine vacuum as one of its inputs. Would think that cost is the driving factor to make this work.
Any idea what "IAFM" stands for?

The new power numbers confuse me. I remember talking about the 5.4 2V and the 5.4 4V a few months back. It was stated that Ford puts the 4V in the Navigator to differentiate itself from the F-series trucks by giving the
4V version significantly more power (understandable). Why not just put the 4V version into the F-series...the power numbers will be very close.

Engine Horsepower Torque

5.4 (3V) 305-325 365-385
5.4 (4V) 325 355

Why waste your time engineering a new engine when the performance numbers are so close?

I am also disappointed with the 4.6 liter performance gains. Since it's introduction, they have increased HP by 13% (taking 2003 numbers). The 5.4 liter has increased a minimum of 23% (once again, using 2003 numbers). The 4.6 liter is a good engine and I would like to see it get more respect, but its hard if they don't want to give it too many performance upgrades.

The 3 valves/cylinder engine will probably be cheaper to make than the 4 valve/cylinder.

Pastmaster - motorcycle engines with 3 valve/cylinder have 2 intake valves and one exhaust valve.

Dfolk,

Ditto. If Ford can make a 305 hp 4.6l, they can atleast upgrade the 4.6l in the truck.
