Any benefit of a 0W30 oil would only be gained at very cold temps. If you live in a place like that, than I would consider it. Otherise, stick to a thicker oil like a 5W30 (as Ford says), or even a 10W30 if you live in a balmy climate year round. Ford recomends the 5W30 as it provides the best all around viscosity protection at the most temperatures.

I had similar thoughts, did my first oil change at 2000 miles and changed to Mobil 1 0W-30. My reasoning being the better cold startup protection, especially the way these babies rev on that first AM start, right up to 1800 RPM! I also went with the Mobil 1 filter given the info that was posted on the MOPAR site and the poor design of some of the other filters. Right now I am thinking about the remote filter set up from Amsoil, not necessarily because it will make the engine last that much longer, mostly because the filters on these vehicles are a royal pain.

I use Mobil One 5W30 because the Owner's Manual says to use 5W30.
That said, ANY 0W30 oil should provide superior lubrication on "cold start" than their 5W30 would.
I don't live or drive in a climate cold enough to make me consider a 0W30 oil. If I did, I'd choose it over the 5W30.

I have a life-long buddy who lives in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, where it goes to minus 40 sometimes. He's got a '96 F-150 XL supercab (in-line six and 5 speed). I asked him recently what oil he uses, specifically mentioning 0W-30 and synthetic which get a lot of advertising here in Canada.
He says he, and most people he knows up there, use 5w-30 (and block heaters) because that's what Ford says to use. He doesn't use synthetic either, and he loves that truck and changes his own oil, I know - he used that truck last week to go hunting and shot a bison. How about that, moose-man?!
One point of view to consider. Me? I'd use synthetic for sure up there.

A few thoughts...you are certainly out of the warranty period, the manual calls for 5W-30..and I honestly don't think 0W-30 oil will hurt anything. It will flow slightly faster at colder temperatures than the rest..and 0W-30/5W-30 have the same top end rating.
If it were me, I would just stick with the Mobil-1 5W-30 and Motorcraft filter. You can't go wrong and I would bet you will get close to 200,000 miles (or more) out of your truck, with regular oil/filter changes.

I'm with Dustoff. I think 0W-30 is too thin for CA. Southern CA, especially. Here in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, I don't know anyone who uses 0W-30 except in the wintertime, and it's rare to see it used even then. It's all 5W-30.

I for one would *not* recommend using 20w-50!!!
I live in Georgia and you know how hot it gets here..I have ONLY used 5W-30 and have NEVER had a problem. 5W-30 will be perfectly fine for you in California
The owners manual and all repair manuals specifically say to ONLY use 5W-30! It is even stamped on your info sticker under your hood!!!

Who would not recommend using 20w-50?
My '99 5.4L with 11,000mi now, started with factory oil. The first 3 oil changes were 10w-40 then I've been running 20w-50. I feel its just not that cold here in Southern Ca. Tell me if I'm wrong, but isn't the temp. range approx 20 to 120 degrees F for this stuff.

BYGBRI, I would encourage you, friendly-like, to switch back to what Ford specifies for the remainder of your warranty. While in-warranty, I keep meticulus (sp?) records on maintenance, including keeping the filter boxtops, and recording brand, weight, and how much (6 qts.) of oil put in. Just so if you have an engine problem, they don't blame it rightly or wrongly on the oil you used being different than they specified.
BYGBRI,
I strongly agree with using 5W-30 as you owner's manual states. If you EVER have a warranty problem with your engine with Ford you are SOL. The 20W-50 oil is not recommended for any new engine that I know of, especially the SOHC and DOHC engines of today.
How can you go wrong with using what the Ford engineers recommend?

Thanks everyone who replied,
Granpa, I to, keep those same meticules records. The ballots have been counted, the oil will be changed back to the factory specified weight range. It's message boards like this that save me from myself.
Again, Thank You All!
