hey. i have a 4.2L 5speed 2001 f150 and i wondering what some inexpensive upgrades were. performance wise that is. i want to get all i can out of my truck....but i do not have much bank to put into it. i would appreciate info as well as links to places to obtain the things you suggest. thanks.

For that money I would swap the rear gears to 4.10. The difference is amazing. The 4.2 makes its power in the upper RPM's anyway. If you do a lot of highway driving, 70 mph +, it might be a little much. Do the math before you decide what you can live with. Randy's R&P, www.randysringandpinion.com, has a handy calculator. I went from 3.08 to 3.73 with factiory tires and it was by far the best mod I did. I would have went to 4.10 if I had it to do over again. You should have enough left over to put a Flowmaster 40 series on. It will sound good, but the power difference is negligible.

 

I have the 2000, 4.2 5spd. I put in an AirRaid FIPK and I love it. It gives the truck a great "seat of the pants" power increase at around 2500 rpms. At $180, it's hard to beat.
