Thumbs down engine spark knock or pinging.

I know this subject was dealt with many posts ago but I would like to bring it back to the fore again if I could.
I need to know if any one out there in this excellent site has a cure or remedy for this problem, mine happens at light throttle or wot. I am now trying a higher octane and have tried some cleaners in the past.
I don't wish to bore with this topic but I haven't seen any posts on this subject lately.

Well I'm no expert but for the most part I'm pretty sure raising the octane is the solution for reducing pinging. The pinging may be due to any mods you have done. Do you have any mods? Just my .02

Mine has 44K+ miles on it and the pinging seemed to get worse with time. It occured at light load and a WOT while passing.

This last tank of gas I tried the Chevron fuel system treatment with Techron and it seemed to help a lot. Cost about $11 for 20 oz.-I think. This is the same gas station and 87 grade I have always used. The higher octane didn't help.

Well 46red, you can always try the "tried and true" (in some situations) method of disconnecting the battery and powering down the computer for 1/2 hour, reconnecting and re-teaching the engine. Did it to see if my harsh shifting automatic would straighten up (it didn't) and I gained 1 mpg. Did something to the engine management system, perhaps it could work for your problem.......j.b.

I agree:

1) Try the computer reset
2) Try a different brand of fuel
3) Try a higher grade of fuel
4) Try a good fuel injector cleaner

Remember, the owners manual specifically states.." do not be concerned if your vehicle sometimes knocks lightly. However, if it knocks heavily under most driving conditions on fuel of the recommended octane, see your dealer...to prevent any engine damage." (1998 manual page 187 under Octane recommendations..not sure of page # in the 2000 manual...I'm too lazy to go out and get it).

Cool

Red do you know your computer code? It is three letters fllowed by a number located on the passanger door frame. If it says FOU1 that is typ. See if Ford can "flash" the computer, or Chip it!
I chipped mine, but you then have to use premium gas. I always ran 89 oct so I didn't know until later that this code does this. Ford has discontinued using this code because of it.
