Question 5.4 Engine or 4.6?

I have a crate motor that I believe is a 1999/2000 5.4l motor. However, the block/stroke and other measurements are the same as my 97 4.6 on my engine stand. How can I positively tell what I have? It's a Windsor motor with a 6 bolt flywheel and all aluminum block and heads. My 4.6 has a 8 bolt flywheel. I've been told that there's actually two versions of the 5.4, one high end and one low output. . . . any ideas?

Thanks,
Brian

The 5.4 is a "stroked" 4.6, so it's not a 5.4 if the stroke is equal.

Don't know if this will help any. The 4.6 bore x stroke is 3.55 x 3.54. The 5.4 is 3.55 x 4.17. There were 2 different 5.4's made that year but only one was used in the F150. The DOHC produced 300HP and 330 ft/lb for 99 and 345 ft/lb for 00. That was used in the navigator. The SOHC produced 260HP and 345 ft/lb for both years and was used in the navigator and F150. All that info was taken from the chilton's manual I have. If that is true that they used teh same block I am going to make mine a 5.4. Muuuhahhahahah.

If you have a picture of it post it. I could tell which it is by looking at it.

Are you sure that it has an aluminum block????? If so it would probably be the 4.6l for the 2002 explorer. The 5.4 and 4.6 engines prior to that have cast iron blocks with aluminum heads.

More Information . . . . . .
The block appears to be aluminum and the flywheel is a 6 bolt flywheel compared to most 8 bolt flywheels associated with f150's, Navigator's and high end Mustangs. The engine doesn't have the F150 throttle body (towards front of engine) . . . . . it has one like the Mustang without the Horse emblem (facing passenger side of car). The engine does have the PI aluminum heads with a part number found on Mustang 4.6l engines. However, these heads might have been available for both 4.6 and 5.4 motors? . . . not sure

I will obtain a picture ASAP and post . . .

Thanks for all the responses,
Brian
