if you know anything about 5.0's please read!

i was considering rebuilding my engine and then adding a couple of performance parts, but the costs of doing that are really high from the quotes ive gotten. turns out, for the same price i can buy a gt-40 crate engine from summit (complete with all internals, just need to add induction and exhaust). heres my question, i know that stangs and trucks have different intake manifolds, so will a truck intake fit this engine? what about the exhaust, will truck headers fit? or will i need mustang headers? thanks for any help!!!

Hi Donate,

Generally speaking, you buy those parts for the *vehicle* that the 5.0 motor is in, like the headers, for example. You'll simply use 5.0 headers made for your 1989 F-150 with the 5.0 motor. Your 5.0 uses many of the same parts that the Mustang GT version of the 5.0 users, so you have a fair amount of interchangability there. Just talk to Summit about this and they can go over the details with you.

Crate motors can be a great deal, most of those crate 5.0's are setup for the Explorer, just talk with your engine vendor about that specifically, to see what if anything needs to be changed for installation in your 1989 F-150.

Good luck!

I think most of the stuff will work. I believe that you will need a different oil pan. I would go a different route than a GT-40 motor though. You could get a much better setup buying a different 306 rebuild and adding a better set of heads than the GT-40 irons.

Thank me later for solving your problems.

www.centralcoastmustang.com

320hp crate $1900.00

They will give you an explorer intake and 65mm TB for under $500

Lot's of options here man. Just have to know where to look.

By the way I just sold my mustang today. Kind of sad, but happy to get it sold to pay some bills off!

Question

I'd do a bit more research on the computer deal. I have no idea, but I'd think that the Mustang computer will have the spec's "hard coded" for the size and weight of a Mustang. Not a 5k# truck. Maybe you could find a "superchip" that can be custom programed. Just a thought. Sounds like a great project.

(I wonder what ever happened to that guy who was installing a 5.0 in a 97 F150?)

hey 02XLT, have you done business with them before? if so, are they good to do business with? i emailed them and they already replied answering every question i had. turns out all i need to get is a mustang computer with the mass air setup. my intake manifold will work perfectly, and i can use my current distributor, oil pan, timing chain cover, valve covers, and accessories. thanks again for the tip!

I have read several good articles about them so that is why I directed you that way. I knew you would not need an Explorer intake but it would flow better than your stock setup.

One way of eliminating your computer problem would to go carb!

Up to you though man... If you do get that 320hp crate engine I would suggest going with the E-303 cam. It is street/emissions legal and will give you good torque/horsepower.

Good Luck!

Check these links out!

I have no experience with the links above...just somethnig I found with a quick search.

DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH DENNIS HILLIARD, AKA CCM!

He is a scam artist at best. He does budget builds on the motors and the shipping is horrible! The engines dont last very long and there are many reports of them being damaged in shipping!

You get what you pay for with a motor!!!!!

Generally speaking, you can use a crate motor. You will need to reuse your front accessories and brackets, oil pan and pickup, and either use the stock intake or fab the mustang/explorer one to work. Just remember that you will have to have MassAir to run a 320hp crate motor. The SD is not going to cut it.

I have heard good and bad from all mail order shops. Just depends. If it as mine......I wuold do alot myself, but you can always look for a local machine shop for help. Much easier to deal with someone you can see!

If I had to buy a crate engine and did not do it myself, I would most likely go with a FMS crate. I just trust that out of all the crate builders, this option wuold be my best.

Summit will not have the lowest prices on these crates, unless you call them and talk them down.

Matt90GT may be able to offer some suggestions as weel, since he also has a mustang.

Good Luck

matt,
thanks for the tip about ccm!

o2xlt,
i was considering the 302 longblock from fms, summit has it for 3200. do you think i could get it anywhere else for cheaper? im not really worried about what kind of heads come with the engine, because im planning to upgrade them later after i have the engine. i do, however, want to get an HO block so i can run a roller cam. where else can i shop for these fms engines?

I think it is www.yearone.com that I ordered a catalog from and it had the FMS crate engines...Even 351 FMS crates.

You can get the FMS with GT-40X heads rated at 345hp from them for about $3100.00 I believe. Take a look.

Donate54,

Take a look at the factory rebuilts at www.jasperengines.com

They come with a 3yr/75000 warrenty. I've had one for about six months and have not had any trouble. Doesn't burn an ounce of oil and my gas miliage is better than it ever was with the origional engine.
