Unless you've got some PROOF, I don't believe you're hitting 80+ miles an hour in 3rd gear with a Mazda M5OD and 3.55:1 rear end gearing, the gearing simply won't allow it. I could believe 80+ in 4th gear with the same setup generates 5500 revs, because I've seen that. As for your traffic lies, I've driven in Illinois, Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Arkansas, Wyoming, New Mexico, Arizona, Hawaii, Japan, Republic of the Phillipines, Washington state, Oregon, ALL over California, Oklahoma, and Texas. The ONLY places where they really FLY are Texas and the Phillipines. I've spent enough time driving in BIG cities and wide open spaces to know most of your stories are CRAP!

Ford Man,

Its just a problem and he wants it fixed, no biggie.

Topic,

Now if you reset the computer, does the odometer reset? Do I lose my radio stations, etc? What does resetting it help or do?

What difference does it make. Take a Zanex Ford man!

Fast46,
I did have to reset my radio stations but the odometer was not effected.
I am just assuming that disconnecting the battery is the same as re-booting a Personal Computer. In any event IT WORKED!
I haven't found any other side effects.

Chill out. Also do the math. A 30" tire gives between 693 and 698 revs per mile depending on manufacturer, so lets average it out to 695, OK. That means that with a 3.55 and a 1.4 3rd gear ratio the truck is turning:

695 x 3.55 x 1.4 = 3455 RPM at 1 mile/min or 60 MPH.

AT 83 that would be:

83/60 x 3455 = 4780 RPM.

At 5500 RPM MPH would be:

5500/4780 x 83 = 95.5 MPH in 3rd gear assuming the speed limiter doesn't activate below this.

You can work out the 3.08s for yourself. It's not rocket science, it's high school math. Give us a break.

I don't think Ford man has spent much time driving in the high desert. Driving in LA and driving in the high desert are like night and day. It's the only place where I have ever seen 55 MPH streets in residential areas and a street light on a 55 MPH road.

Hell, my cousin's wife who's an LA County Deputy Sheriff told me to drive the same speed as the traffic does even if it's 20 mph over the speed limit.

Jim, did your speed limiter go up after you reset the computer? I wonder if the computer has some kind of fail-safe mode that limits the speed under certain conditions?

I DON'T GIVE A GOOD GOD DAMN ABOUT ANY OF YOUR MATHEMATICAL EQUATIONS, HOMER. I'VE HAD A HELL OF A LOT MORE MATH BACKGROUND IN COLLEGE AND ELSEWHERE THAN I WILL EVER HAVE THE TIME TO MENTION HERE. GET IN YOUR LITTLE PICKUP, HONEY, AND TRY TO GET IT UP TO 80 MILES AN HOUR IN 3RD GEAR. GO AHEAD AND TRY IT. I'VE DRIVEN ALL OVER THAT GODFORSAKEN SESSPOOL OF CALIFORNIA; HIGH DESERT, LA, SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA, YREKA, SAN DIEGO, YOU NAME IT. I DON'T BELIEVE ANY OF YOUR HOT ROD STORIES. THE CHP'LL BURN YOUR ASSES. I'VE DONE 65 AND 70 AND PASSED EVERYONE ON A REGULAR BASIS OUT THERE. CONCOCT SOMETHING ELSE TO TELL ME.

Never been to CA, never hope to. I can vouch for what I claimed about Detroit in rush hour though, it's unreal, whether you choose to believe it or not.

As it turns out, I design gear trains for a living as well as screw around with them on weekends. If the numbers are wrong, show me where, I'm always willing to learn from a real "expert".

BTW the name's not Homer.

sounds like fordman has done alot of driving in the slow lane unless of course he was in the fast lane with alot of lights flashing behind him. all eager to pass and get back to real speeds.
btw jacksonville fl. is always a treat it's 85 or get the h#ll out of the way there.
btw strangeranger: if i change my gear ratio from 3:08 to 3:73 would that lower the point where the limiter would attack me?

Wild Child
The processor's top speed governor trips off of speed, not RPM, although there's also a built in rev limiter. There's been a LOT of discussion in this area. At some point Ford switched from sensing speed at the trans to sensing it at the ring gear. If your speedo works off the tranny, then it would affect the speed limiter unless you recalibrate to match the new R & P. If it senses speed at the ring gear then it will be accurate regardless of ratio, but still sensitive to tire changes.

Sorry, I don't know exactly when the change was made or if there's a variation in which variants it affects. Maybe someone else on the list can help you on that one.

thanks much strangeranger:will have to find out where my speed sensor is. i have a '97 f150. i may have to do some research for that one.lol
thinking about going from 245x75 tires to 265x75 and not sure about the power loss although i've seen a few on this board who say they've done it and like it.

Oh, I know, I always hear the little sob stories from everyone. "We drive faster than anyone here in Hooterville." "We drive even faster than that here in Bumbleass Nowhere." WHATEVER!!!! I'VE BEEN TO ALL OF THOSE GOD-DAMNED PLACES AND I KNOW WHAT'S TRUE AND I KNOW WHAT'S EXAGGERATED!!!!! I'VE SEEN THE FAR SIDE OF 100 MILES AN HOUR MANY TIMES IN MANY DIFFERENT VEHICLES!!! I'VE ALSO WORKED AROUND ENGINEERS WITH THEIR HEADS UP THEIR ASSES. "I GOT THIS HERE SLIDE RULE THAT SEZ YOU CAN'T DO THAT. PIE ARE SQUARE." AND THEN YOU PROVE 'EM WRONG. PIE ARE ROUND, BABE, CORNBREAD ARE SQUARE.

In my '95 F-150/4.9L/5 speed/3.55:1, I can stay in 4th gear up to 85mph, easily. I try to shift to 5th by 70mph, but there are times when 4th is necessary.
Take care,
~Chris

Ford man,
Maybe it's Prozac you need. In any event how about editing yourself a little bit. No one here is impressed by your foul language. It's a sign of ignorance.
