Cool HOMEMAID ! !

I just got done making my own open element air filter for my '99 5.4! What a difference!! Truck runs smoother and seems to shift smoother. It was well worth the money I saved by doing it myself. About half the price as the velocity tube. Getting ready to install my superchip today. If anyone has any questions feel free to ask. I will be glad to share!!

When you say you made "my own open element air filter" did you mean the actual filter or do you mean the tube that goes from the throttle body to the airfilter? If it is the latter i want to know.

I would also be interested in mods that cost little or no money and work. Can you post or email what exactly you did? Pictures would also be a help.

Funkster,

You know we're going to ask how you did it! And also want to see it. You definitely have to post dummy instructions and pics!!!

A must on a custom mod

Funkster, when you made your own fresh air system, did you use a K&N filter?
That's what I had in my truck and it gives a better air flow when the fresh air meets the filter..
The one I made up has improved my performance and gas milage.
If I didn't have on those dual Dynomax's I'd probably hear the sucking sound better.
This has to be the best and cheapest mod in history.....
Good Luck and keep us informed on your milage.

Sorry everyone, but I've been away from the computer. I first purchased the replacement K&N air flter for the stock housing. Next, I made a shim ,like the one on this web site, except I made mine from the bottom of a black bucket. Therefore I didn't have to paint it and you really can't tell it's there. I then purchased a 3" Carlan elbow at an electrician's supply shop. It was in the exact shape I needed! I then went to Lowes and bought a 4-3 rubber reducer, and a 3-2 rubber reducer. I mounted the air filter to part of the stock housing like the one on this site. I then took off the black pipe right after the mass flow air sensor. I heated up the 3-2 reducer so it would fit on the throttle body. I cut the elbow on both ends to fit. I mounted the 4-3 reducer on the end of the mass. I then removed the heat sensor from the factory housing and drilled a hole on the new pipe close to the end where it mounts in the 4-3 reducer and placed it in the hole. MAKE SURE TO CLEAN ALL THE SHAVINGS OUT OF THE PIPE!! I sealed it with RTV sealent. I rapped the pipe with reflective heat tape and stuck it on. It looks good and I've gained about 1 mpg.

Cool

You can remove the tube that is inside the flat black looking piece that goes from the throttle body to the MAF sensor. This keeps the factory look and gives a better throttle response. you can also get the K&N filter replacement for the stock box and then cut the box for it to be an open air element. I have noticed a difference in MPG and response. If you would like pics, send me an email to extosea@yahoo.com and I will send them to you.
