UPDATE: THE UNSOLVABLE PROBLEM...SOLVED!!!
I had the 82mph CHUG that would not allow me to go over that speed and presented the problem on the message board.
Thank you to those who suggested the battery disconnect to "re-boot" the computer.
I disconnected the battery (and turned on the headlight switch (?))and let it sit for about 30 minutes.
The next day I had to drive to Denver and "tried it out". It was a smooth, uninterupted acceleration right up and past 95MPH. I brought it down and tried it several more times and it continues to work.
On the way back today it STILL works.
As to the speed issue. I drive the speed limit but you want some in reserve for passing. ALSO if something is WRONG at 82mph, I think it indicates that there may be another problem...even if you never drive 82mph, you want to know WHY the vehicle CAN'T..don't you??
Thanks again to everyone that helped with suggestions. I printed them and started with the cheapest fix first and it WORKED.
The message board is a great resource.

Glad to hear it's fixed.
When turning on headlights with battery disconnected you only have to wait 10 minutes before you can reconnect and go...
BTW - thanks for starting a new thread. The original was starting to get wierd.

Whoops! Didn't see this new thread, so you can ignore my question about the fix. You answered it here.
Isn't this place a great resource? In '97, I learned about getting the free alignment before 12/12,000. That alone saved a chunk of money. Then, last year, I learned about how to get rid of a rough idle problem I had. Worked like a charm. Now, I save money every time I fill up the tank (mpg went up by at least 1).

I did not know it would only take 10 minutes...thanks for the update. I will remember that if I ever have to reset the computer.

Ford Man,
I performed the test in my F150. I decided to shift into 4th gear at 76 mph, with the tachometer reading 4500 rpms. This truck could easily go the disputed 82 mph in 3rd gear, but I dont want to push mine that hard. This was with a 3.55 rearend, with a long bed SuperCab. That corresponds to 60 rpm/mph, which would mean at 82, the truck would be turning 4920 rpms, which I know it can do.
If I can do this in the longest, heaviest 4x4 made with the 4.6 with 5 speed, I am sure that anything smaller could go even faster in 3rd.
