Cool Squealin' Tires

Alright my Fordified friends,

I've added the Airaid. I've added the Superchip. I've added the Gibson. Performance (torque & HP) have been noticeably increased. One thing that still doesn't happen, however, is punching it and getting the tires to leave a trail. Now, this isn't my life-long goal, however something tells me that until this happens I know I haven't added enough stuff. My only chance at a minimal squeal is to turn while flooring it from a stop.

Is it that my truck (2000 F-150 SC 4.6L w\ heavy hard tonneau cover) is too heavy? 4.6L too weak?

I've heard of others adding performance products to their F-150s (even SCs) and been able to lay rubber. Is there something else that I must do to obtain pure off-the-line punch?

If so, what? Here are some options:
  • Headers
  • TB spacer
  • Power pullies
  • Supercharger??
  • Better oil? (I'm scrapin' here)

I don't want to be at the point where starting from every stoplight yields a squeal, just so that if I punch it there's a result. Thanks for your help!

Try Sammy Hagar's method in "I Can't Drive 55", "One foot on the brake, and one on the gas, yeah!" j/k. Seriously, you are carrying alot of weight. If you want to smoke 'em, get a Supercharger.

I'll trade tires with you and you will be able to squeal them with no problem.
(or should I say squealing is too much of a problem)

Install 4.10 us/strange gears..Then go shopping for traction bars to keep from throwing the tires off or wheel hopping ... Caltrac's are good. Total $900.oo .. 1/3 to 1/4 the cost of supercharger and no upkeep.

Look up "Too much wheel spin" in Tires forum. Mine spin pretty freely, as do a couple of other 4.6s. Others with the 5.4 can't spin them in the rain. It's an F-150 mystery My Michelin LTX tires are supposed to be some of the best...

I can spin the Goodyears on mine with no problem but it can be a pain in the *** in the rain with to much wheel spin but with the snow I had this winter it got good traction for some odd reason and I have the regular 3.55 axel.

I think it also has a lot to do with the pavement materials. Where I live, they use a crushed basalt (some know it as blue rock). It's hard rough stuff with sharp edges and really grabs the rubber. Wheel spins, but takes a bit of effort.

Then, there's weather, temperature, and whole slew of other variables.

BTW, if you really want to lay a lot of rubber, hitch up a 6,000 lb trailer to the rear and floor it. I guarantee you'll lay down a LOT of rubber!

If you really want to impress people, do what the Hollywood stunt drivers do. Hook up plumbing to remotely spray something like WD-40 on the tires.

I can't get mine to lay it down either but I have the Limited Slip rear end. That helps. If I power brake it they will brake loose but I don't like that. Minor squels off the line, major squels around turns, big plumes of smoke in the rain.

Yes, I was going to mention tires too. And your Limited Slip. Those Goodyear AP's will slip real good and I am sure there are many a set for sale!

Cool

Duke,
I can break my 265/75's loose from a dead stop. BUT it depends on the surface, and I am not talking about sand or dirt base.
We will have to hook up att he SD rally.

Those hard tonneau covers are heavy. That could be your problem. My 98 5.4 will bark the tires from take off anytime I ask her to.

Thanks for all the feedback, everyone. Tonight I was finally able to get 'em to spin, only 'cuz it's raining out! I think it's just heavy back there because of the tonneau, as a few of you pointed out. It does get up and go off the line, and maybe I should just be satisfied with that!

Capt. America suggested getting "4.10 us/strange gears", which I'm not sure what that might involve. I am planning on getting the 18" chrome SVT Lightning wheels and some new tires after we're done figuring out our taxes so maybe I will notice something different then. I now need to spend oodles of time researching the "Wheels & Tires" forum to see what you all think are the best tires for general street use.

franks&beans, see you at the SD rally!
