Never seen 20 either, and I have a V-6 2wd! I occasionally top 18. In my experience driving 75+ on the highway kills the mpg, as does stop and go driving.

11 to 13 sounds really low. What gears do you have?

I'm with you. Same as DB Dave. 4.2 auto with 3.55's gave me 18.1 once on a trip. Right now we're looking at 13.2 ave over 3 tanks. This is my 7th F-150. Unless you go mostly highway, you probably wont get what we would consider "good" mileage. My 6 cyl's never did do better than my 302's. Lets not mention the "ole 460". Its real clear,, Ford does not boast "good" mileage on their full size trucks. (I still love em though!!!)

I haven't seen 20 in mine either but I'll learn to live with it I thought about going back to a mustang gt but when I test drove one the other day I forgot how small they were on the inside I had to have the seat all the way back in it in this truck I have a little more room.

But who would buy a truck for MPG? You should know you wont get as good as a Geo Metro.

tele--

I have had as high as 18 mpg on the highway..and that's with a 5.4L, 4x2 with 3:55 rear end. In town..I am still getting right around 14 mpg.

Seems like the 4x4 option is eating into your mileage.

I am with fast..I bought mine for the size and V8 power...not the mileage.

Cool

V8 all the way !!
It sucks down the gas, but that's the price you gotta pay for driving a 4500lbs truck.
If it helps ease your pain any, think of it this way:
If you bought a gas sippin' car you would loose your azz at trade time because most cars depreciate horribly.
Our trucks hold thier value better than just about any other vehicle on the road.
Waht you pay in gas you save in depreciation.
How many 5 year old Geo's (or most any other car) can you sell for more then 1/2 what you paid for it?
Plus if you get in a wreck I would MUCH rather be in my gas hog than a 1800lbs Geo.
For that matter my fat 240lbs 6'3" azz couldn't even fit in a Geo to begin with.

And don't forget that F150's have lower insurance costs. Suprisingly, the 4x4 is cheaper to insure. Check out http://www.statefarm.com/media/release/rates.htm You will notice that most of the cars that have decent gas mileage have higher than average insurance costs.

I can maintain 20-21 MPG on a trip. Combiation is, '98 F150, 4WD, reg cab, 4.6, 5-speed, 3.55:1 axle, non AC, stock tires @ 42 PSI, steady 60 MPH, tonneau cover, Mobil 1 10W-30, 0W synthetic gear oil in transmission and transfer case, special 75W-140 synthetic in differential, no dumb-*** bug deflectors or sun visor to add parasitic drag.
Driving habits alone will benefit MPG more then all the hokey aftermarket stuff.

Thumbs up

I noticed that about the insurance with my F-150!! My 2000 F-150 only costs $40.00 more per *year* to insure than my wifes 2000 Saturn LS-1. Considering my sticker price was $5,000 more than the Saturn.

You do save $$ in Insurance rates, better resale value and better safety...so a higher fuel bill is just fine with me.

To really increase mileage, you have to drive granny style on the city, and a ponderous stride on the freeway no higher than 70 mph. Smooth driving plus the right tire psi's go long way. At city driving and rough handling, I get 14-15 mpg's unloaded. I have gotten 18-19-20 mpg's 90% freeway with overloads at <70 mph.

Leo dC

PS Nobody in their right mind buys a truck for mpg's that is absolutely true. But nobody can afford to suck that much gas all the time. I love trucks, but if the need to haul wasn't there, I can't justify the purchase. Here in the Bay Area where gas is $1.50 regular, every extra 1 mpg is like gold.
