My Cheap Plastic Gas Peddle Broke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HI!... I was on my way out to my boss's house tonight when a car in front of me was making a right hand turn. I slowed down, and after the car turned I went to accelerate again and I heard a "SNAP" and the truck went back to idle! I was only about a mile from my boss's house, so I idled there at 15kph!!!!!!!! After I got there I looked up under the dash with a flaslight to see what was wrong. The 1st 1.5 inches of the gas peddle broke clean off!!!!!! Who was the brillant engineer that designed a gas peddle out of plastic????? What a frickin MORON!!!!! In order to get home I had to tie a string around the throttle cable end still sticking through the firewall and pull the throttle with my hand! All I can say is that I'm PISSED OFF!!!! I've been working on my truck all week trying to get it ready for THE SPARTA DRAGWAY MEET, and now this happens! I'm leaving at 7:30A.M on SATURDAY morning and now I have NO gas peddle! I'm going to the dealer tomorrow with my broken gas peddle and am demanding a new one under my warrenty. I now for a fact that they won't have one in stock, but I'm going to demand they take one off one of the 50 F-150's they have on the lot. I've invested a lot of time and money in my truck for this weekend and I'm not going to miss it for anything or anyone. I'll keep you guys updated on what happens.
SORRY just venting!
SORRY just venting!
HI!... Well guys went to my dealer today, and what else is new? The broken gas pedal is not covered under my extended warrenty. I then got pissed off and asked them what the HELL I spent $1400(CAN) for if everytime I come in here to get something fixed that it's not covered?!!!!!!!! Then they started giving me some heeeing and hawwwwing and I looked them right in the face and told them both to F-off and to go screw themselves and I walked away. I then went to the parts counter in the next building and FORD has got to be on CRACK!!!!! $162.00(CAN) for a frickin gas pedal? C'mon! They told me it would be special order and they could'nt get me one for a week! Well I told them I was going on a trip at 7:30A.M tomorrow morning and I needed a pedal. They said tough luck! Well he got told to F -off too! I then went down to a local auto wreckers and they had one from a "99" F-150 for $40(CAN). So I got that one. It's funny because everyone I showed the broken pedal to, could'nt beleive that it was made out of plastic. That just shows you how cheap FORD's is getting! When I got home I fabricated up 2 peices of 1/8th inch thick aluminum supports that I attached to the front and back of the new pedal just below where the throttle cable attaches. Since I did'nt want to drill any holes into the plastic, because that would just weekin it more. I took 1 inch wide electrical tape and wrapped it around the support peices very, very tightly. Hopefully this will add a bid more ridgidity to the pedal. Just thought I'd let you guys know how I made out. Now I'm ready for SPARTA!lol!

The lesson in all this, boys and girls is:
If you drive like Neal, you gonna break that gas pedal.
Neal, I understand that Ford bit the bullet in '02 a sprung for a steel gas pedal. They were still able to save some money by making the brake pedal plastic.

Neal,
That is what happens when you drop a lead foot on a plastic pedal.
Check the linkage/cable. It is possibly too tight or it is improperly adjusted. The slack should be all taken up when the pedal reaches the stopper not before.
Another possability is that you press too hard on the pedal... There is normally space between the floor and the pedal when the pedal is up against the stopper. The stopper is built into the mounting bracket, it is not on the floor.

Talk about having a heavy right foot! That is just another reason why i have decided to never own a vehicle manufactured before 1995.

Neal,
I have to congratulate you. You are the first person I ever
heard about that has broken his accelerater pedal. I read that
plastic will last 2500 years if left alone. I really believe you when you say that Ford service and parts suck. It's not just in Canada that when they get your money that they feel the show is over and not to bother them again until you need a new car. I don't think this is particular to Ford though. I had a Toyota Tundra until I figured it wouldn't pull a decent size trailer and had to buy me a Super Duty 6.8L. They won't even return your calls when you have a problem. So far I'm lucky no problems with the Ford. I enjoy your exploits with your truck. Just wandering have you ever hooked up with one of the new Mustang Cobra's. Have a good time and keep on trucking.
