Thumbs up Porting Throttle Bodies

have any of you guys done any porting of your throttle bodies? i have been thinking about going to a junk yard in town and maybe looking for a throttle body to just try it on and see how it works, and you know, if it doesnt then i still got my stock one. one of my buddies ported his 87 TBI throttle body and it worked just perfectly, so i have been thinking about maybe trying it on my truck. i've got a few questions. if i did do it, how much would i need to port? would i need another butterfly or would the one allready in it be the right size? thanks everybody

complete waste of time. even on the modified lightnings larger throttle bodies are adding zero performance. yes, if you remove the butterfly and bore it out you would need a bigger butterfly.

Cool

HI!... BULLIT : I ported out my stock 70mm TB. If you use a digital caliper you will see that the stock TB is a true 70mm around the butterfly and back. BUT the 1st section of the TB throat is only about 66mm. I completely disassembled my TB and proceeded to port it out with a 3 inch 180 grit paddle sanding wheel on a hand held drill. When I acheived my desired 70mm bore size I put a MIRROR like finish on it with a 600 grit, 3 inch paddle sanding wheel. Just make sure you don't go past where the butterfly sits with the 180 grit wheel or you will "EGG" shape the bore. You only want to remove material before the butterfly but you can pass the 600 grit wheel through the entire bore to clean it up nicely. If you want to spend the money you can buy a 75mm BBK TB, but you will have to port-match the TB elbow to match the bigger TB. As for the LIGHTNING's, I have seen dyno sheet, showing up to a 8 H.P increae using BABOLT's oval, single bore TB's.

half the tunner say the throttle body does nothing , the other half ( the ones who sale them) say thay add throttle response. not more h.p., no posted e.t reductions. do a search on throttle body in the lightning section.
my experience is this. i bought a 86 mustang gt brand new and took it to the track after every modification. the last mod i did was spend alot of time porting my upper intake to match my 65mm throttle body upgraded from the stock 55mm. i was rewarded with an identical e.t. and mph. this on a car that stock ran 14.9 @ 92 modified to run 14.0 @98. no gain. second vehicle is my firebird modified from a stock 14.7 to bored and stroked 383 that runs 12.5 @ 110 . i thought surely this motor needed a larger throttle body. went from a stock dual 48 mm to a dual 52 mm. no reduction in e.t. or mph.
both of these were aftermarket throttle bodies not flapper wheel modified stock ones.

HI!... All I know is it worked on my truck and 4 of my buddies MUSTANGS and one guy with a modded 4.0 RANGER. Just because it did'nt work for you does'nt mean it does'nt work. IMO

sounds good

NEAL, i understand what you're saying and it all makes sense...i do have another question...i am going to get my superchip reprogrammed for headers in the near future, do you think i would need to get another program added for the TB? and by the way, i DO think that porting the TB could help out a little in E.T.s, my buddy's truck cut about 2 tenths and has a little better throttle response out of the hole...otherwise i wouldnt be asking...i think it works....

HI NEAL
I'm not usually over here, but I saw the topic. BABolt can make a Single bore (oval bore) for the Bullitt with "Bullitt" engraved on it on top. He does this for Lightnings also, (and Cobra's and others poss.) and has done plenty. The Bullitt TB has a very thin sidewall in the bores and wouldn't do much good trying to bore it out, you would end upo hitting the bearing pocket for the shaft.
You can get him at mphillips@mediaone.net Hope this helps!

HI!... BULLIT : If you do decide to port you TB you will not need a custom program. That's what MIKE T told me. The header program is good for about 5H.P according to MIKE T on the 5.4. I have that custom program on my SUPERCHIP plus about 10 others!LOL! By the way, when I ported my TB I also trimmed down the butterfly shaft. I removed the front section of the shaft totally. Now the screws go through the butterfly and thread in from the rear shaft. Make sure you put a dab of lock tite on the screw if you remove them.

HI!... PFA : I don't think BULLIT is talking about a TB from a BULLIT MUSTANG. I think that's just his user name. The stock 70mm TB on the regular F-150's have plenty of material to port.
