Question Check Engine Light

I've got 52,000 mi. on my 1998. The check engine light came on. Do you think it's one of my sensors gone bad??

Hi ,

I have 54k on my 97, and the check engine light came on. I just disconnected the battery for about 5 min and the light went out. That was about 1000 miles ago, it has not come back on as of yet.

My check engine light came on with only 10,000 miles. I had read on the message board about the proper fit of the gas cap,so I filled up the tank, tightened down the cap and after about 5 cycles the light went out.

If you are unsure whether there is a malfunction or not, assume there is a failure.

For example: If you know you left the gas cap off, replace it and clear codes. If you are unsure and you delete the codes (reset the computer), you are deleting evidence of the problem. This actually makes diagnosis more difficult. It will take at least one complete drive cycle for the codes to reappear.

In other words, you are masking the problem.
