Post Help identifying replacement 5.4 engine

My 5.4 was replaced due to the piston slap issue. It is a '99 Superduty. I want to know if the new engine has the high out-put heads that came on all trucks but the Superduties in '99. It sure seems to have more power.

If you have a '99 f150 or Expedition, please look at the labels on the side of the heads above the exhause manifold and let me know what the label says.

Or, if anybody has labels matching or similar to these listed below, please let me know as it will give me an indication of which new engine I got for my truck.

I know it sounds funny, but the Superduties were a year later getting the hi-output heads that the other trucks got in 99. I think maybe though, that this new engine may of been one of the ones meant for the light duty trucks with the hi-output heads.

Any info about what these labels mean other then the obvious mfgr date would also be interesting.

The labels on the heads say "NEW_DOWEL 5.4 Reg.Duty 19:43 B Mach 5-19-99 8656". The Engine label on the valve cover says "ke881aa Ford Windsor Ont. Canada 991322211 433 5.4 5-12-99"

Thank you in advance for your help! I know it does not really make a big difference, but it is fun to know, and if it is the high-output heads, I will probably have the chip reprogramed to take full advantage of it.

Wow, pardon my ignorance. I didn't know about high output heads. I only know that the '99 5.4's were of greater HP/Torque than '97/98. I had a march '98 5.4 replaced (twice, yes twice) with an FQR 5.4 in late '99. This engine definitely has more power than the '98. There has been lots of speculation on what they did to achieve this power increase.

The labels on my '98 or the FQR's are non-existant except for the "Ford Quality Renewal" one. Oh yes, and the one on the front of the head that says "if the previous engine had metal in the oil, the oil pump must be replaced as well".

I read in an old edition of Fourwheeler mag (I think) , It told exactly what Ford did to the engines. All I remember was that Ford changed the heads and redesingned the ports for more horsepower and better fuel consumption. There was a common complaint that the 5.4 was under powered with poor fuel consumption for it's size. They supposedly upped the hp by 15 and the torque by 20. For '99 it was only shy 15hp against a V10! I will try to find that article and let you know what else it said.

Funkster, yeah thanks, that article would be good info. Can you tell me what the labels on the side of the heads above the manifold and on the rockercover on your rig say?

Thanks!

Just got my FQR as well!!!!! I have the same question!

It sure does have more power! WOW!

I had 49K on the old engine.....

I have NO IDEA what engine I have other than 5.4L......

Love to know.... But I am pretty certain that this is an updated version of the 5.4!

I too have been trying to confirm the model year of my 5.4l since my truck is an Aug 98 build for a 1999 Expy. I was told the cast numbers don't necessarily match the numbers used by parts depts to order from the factory. My heads have no labels just the following cast markings nderneath the exhaust manifolds:

RF XL 3E 6090-C20D (right side)
LF XL 3E 8060-C20D (left side)

The throttle assy and intakes all start with XL........ One parts dept told me that the XL would mean its a 99, XF would be 98. Anyway I rarely get an opportunity to max out the pedal.... guess its enough power!

Well here is what is cast into the heads on mine;

Right Side:
5.4 W Alloy-A
RF-F SE 6090-C20A

Left Side:
V-8 BASE
RF-F 75E 6090-C20A

I would like to see what others have cast on the sides of their heads too. This would help tell us more details about our engines.

The cast numbers seem to just add to the confusion, does Ford do this on purpose or do they have a reason? There must be some unique identifier for a 99 or 00 engine. Does anybody know what might be different ?

Dave XP:

I did'nt think to check the cast numbers, I will look and let you know what mine says. What is the rated HP and Torque in your owners manual? What does the label on your rockercover say?

Anybody else have cast numbers or label numbers off of your heads and rocker cover?
