Cool

Town Car had the modular 4.6 romeo engine first, at the redesign way back around '90 I believe. Horsepower is the rate at which torque is delivered. Look at that new Honda S2000, it's got gobs of hp and no torque. They've gotta rev the begezzas outta it before the thing will move. In the truck world, torque is king!

I had a 98 chevy z-71 with the 350 vortec. To get the maximum torque this engine had to offer, it was turning around 4700 rpm. At around 20,000 miles the engine picked up some valve train noise. A mechanic told me this was because of the high rpm it was turning pulling my trailer. I questioned the longevity of the engine at constant high rpm. With my 5.4 I am getting more torque at 2000 less revs. Much better for me, as I put on a lot of tow miles.

In my opinion, chevy uses "Most horsepower" in it's advertising, but most people do not understand the high rpm you have to run to get it. There is no way this can be good over time.

Had the vortec, like the triton better.

Thumbs up

I agree...Chevy/GMC always advertises 'most horsepower'...but that is not all that important.

Get this...just for grins...I picked up a GMC brochure yesterday...their 6.0 Vortec engine produces 300 HP with 355 lb-ft @4000 rpm. The 5.3L produces 285 HP @ 5200 rpm with 325 lb-ft of torque. Still no overhead cam design.

FORD 5.4L 260 HP with 345 lb-ft @ 2300 RPM.

I have been told that high RPMs is what kills an engine..in time. I'll stick with the Triton!

we had a 93 town car on our lot with just under 90,000 miles. It had the 4.6, I also checked the trip computer, 21.6 avg MPG. Not bad.

OK where do I start......all you FORD guys and gals are correct. The Ford Triton family of engines were not an after thought. They were to replace the push rod design 302, 351, 460, etc. Goal? To have less moving parts and improve fuel economy as well as duribility. I went to the F150 truck school for my job and the modular engine is one extremly tough engine. I have seen several with well over 100,00K and still ran very well.
I could go on and on about it but I am sure you get the picture. By the way the little 4.6 Triton develops 90% of is 290 ft lbs of torque at 2,000 rpm. Can a chevy engine claim that???????

Cool

All thats been said about having more torque is true, thats what pastes you in the seat when you hammer it. It seems to me though on what I've read is that Ford gets more HP to the rear wheels than Shovie does anyway. If its not gettin' there you may as well have that extra HP in the glovebox 'cause it ain't doin squat for ya' other than producing heat and burning gas.

The triton engine family is a wider engine then the windsor emgine family could ever hope to be. Ford doesn't have after thoughts. A vehicle usually is in design for numerous years prior to ever becoming a reality. Besides if Ford can fit the 2.5 v-6 into the contour(worst car to work, up there with probes) then they certainly could of fit a 351 into the f-150.

4D THNDR--

That is exactly what I have heard and agree with you. If the HP is not getting to the ground...then it is basically wasted ink on a sales brochure.

Kenster, multiply the liters by 61.
Actually, it's 61 point something but, it's close enough.

If you think about it, FORD and chevy had these same size engines years ago. Ford made the 331 in the early 70's (we have one in our F600). The 281 is close to the 289. Chevy use to make the 327 and the 396. Except now, the only thing in common with Ford engines now and then is the cubic inches. These new motors are more efficient!
