Engine missing at 40 mph

My 4.6 automatic sometimes misses at 40 mph. I can't tell for sure if it's the motor or the tranny. My local dealer suggested I change the plug wires but the problem still exists and it doesn't do it all the time. I've had it at the dealer but, of course, they can't duplicate the problem. Anybody else having this same problem?

The truck has 35,000 on it. Filter changed at 30,000 as well as all other regularly scheduled maintenance done at that time. Engine light does not come on either. Thanks.

It might be just the torque converter locking up?

You're probably right. It tends to act up when overdrive kicks in.

Definite torque converter problem. Can sometimes be alleviated with a tranny flush and fill. Should be a warranty item if the truck still qualifies. If you have the "missing" problem already on the books, it should still be covered if you have gone over the mileage limit.

Thanks. I really appreciate the assistance. I was at 30,000 and my time on the factory warranty expired one week before this whole thing started. Ford didn't care. Good thing I bought the extended warranty. I'm going to go to a different place for service. Again, thanks.

Just noticed that I said "Definite" when I should have said, "Could definitely be..." There have been several folks here who had a missing or shudder that turned out to be the torque converter. Several have had good results with the tranny flush and fill.

Dennis might be right

Sounds like you might have the 40mph shudder that a lot of members here have

Someone else suggested it's probably the torque converter, which sounds probable. But has anybody figured out this problem for sure? Is Ford admitting to anything?
