all i have to say,is when i buy a truck i want the one with the most power.i really don't use the bed of my truck too much,so it's really doin me no good,so i might as well have the bigger engine that only a truck offers, and personally i couldn't stand a v-6 in a truck.but i race cars,so that makes me want the most power i can get.the only bad thing about the 5.4 is no available 5-speed,and you can get both on the 4.6 so if you want a good balance of power and mileage i'd go for the 4.6

As far as a truck not being a performance vehicle. I would disagree. The new lightnings are damn fast and handle nicely. I am not much for fixing up trucks to go racing and such. Just doesn't make alot of since to me. You can add tons of mods and not be that much faster if that with stock sports cars. I am not trying to start a fight or anything, just saying that I won't be fixing my truck up with any performance mods. And I would much rather take a spin around town in a BMW then a supercharged super crew. Both those vehicles are about the same cost, esp. if you factor in that supercharger. Oh well I am bored, I will race you brotherdave in either of my vehicles. What part of Houston are you in?

Not flaming you either brother dave. I love super crews. Just would rather pimp that BMW.

acadianbob. this discussion was about engines, which usually means straight line performance. my driving record is perfect for the last 10 years my point is that the 328 is a small car in world where over 50% of the vehicle are trucks and suv's.
my current cars are a supercrew and a tahoe, sorry but i cant see loading up a 328 with a baby, 5 year old, the dog, me and my wife to go across town. and as far as that goes if some drunk runs into my wife while see has the kids, i know i had here in vehicle that can take some abuse.
i would guess by your vehicle choice you are young with no kids. check back with me 10 years and tell me how great your 328 is. if i had no kids (,with what my day care and private school cost ,) I promise there would be a z-06 or a 911 in my garage.

Umm

You, 1 wife, 2 small kids and one dog is not exactly a humongous amount of human cargo.

brother dave . . i'm 53 . . .i've raced cars . . . i've managed to raise 2 kids and haul a dog without a 5,000 pound truck . . and performance is a LOT more than a 1/4 mile ET . . . while the discussion was about engines, the point is that the 5.4 is not warranted in many if not most cases for work or play and that trucks are not about ETs . . secondary point, if ETs are of concern, get a car. if i didn't need the truck for my hobby farm i'd be done with it real quick.

check back with me when gas is $3.00 a gallon . . .

p.s. do you think a truck would spin or roll in the slippery stuff? a guy from our church hit a little ice in the shadow of an overpass, got a little sideways, and then got the thrill of watching the pavement go by 6 inches from his face through his side window as he slid on his side down the freeway. virtually every roll i see along the road is a SUV or a pickup. they're far from safe.

eharris3 you either have no kids or no money
me, mywife, 5year old (boy), baby, baby seat, childs seat, diaper bag, portable crib, stoller, thats minimum

all the above plus anything already in the car like a brief case, gym bag, laptop, cleaning, overnight bags if we go somewhere, plus if the baby is fising my wife has to sit in the back and i am not putting my 5 year in hte front seat with an air bag. i am one of those wierd people that me and my family do everthing together and i take just as much responsiblity for the kids as her.

i guess i could be one of those a-holes that buys a 2 seat car and makes my wife do all the picking up and dropping off but that isnt me. i will get my sports car, and i mean sports car, when my kids get a little older and it will be my third car.

anyone who has kids and is a family man knows what i am talking about.

umm...

The only reason I bought this truck is to give it to my wife when we get married in a few months. I would rather have her in this truck than her sunfire. I hear you brother dave.

Actually

I believe I find myself in the ideal situation... no wife, no kids, but after Ive begun to make some modest investments, Ive got a nice amount of money to play with. You're getting kind of touchy bud, so I won't really say much more, except that my parents somehow managed to raise two teenagers from infancy plus cart around just about all that gear you mentioned AND take family vacations across the country in 4-door compacts. And yet somehow we survived, and we did plenty as a family. In addition, since my parents werent spending 50-60 bucks per tank or 30large plus on two different trucks they had a bit more money to invest in our college fund every month while remaining mostly free of non-mortgage debt. So sometimes maybe what we think we need is what we actually want. I have no problem buying to satisfy wants instead of needs, heck I'm considering an F150 though a compact truck would probably be plenty of truck for what I need. I just try to be realistic about the difference. And I think it's kind of amusing when people cite their 2 whole toddlers, plus their huge amount of gear which includes a stroller and a diaper bag, as being too bulky to fit into anything other than a full-sized SUV.

Take a chill pill... the family life getting to you?

02xlt.... i didnt see your post.. let me get the supercharger installed. i live in pearland, i didnt challenge any one to a race but if you that is what you want. i have a 89 firebird formula with a built 383, airflow research heads, ligenfelter cam and intake that runs 12.5 @110 without the 150 compucar N02. i didnt mention it before because this is a f-150 sight not a let me jump in my other car and smoke you sight . the days of going to westimer and racing at 1:00 in the morning are long gone, i built the car in 94 before kids now it gathers dust . driving day to day i love the way my supercrew drives, i almost hate driving cars because it feels like i am sitting in a hole after diving truck so much.

dont tell me you wouldnt love to pull up next to a 328, after a hard day at work on your way home to pick-up the kids for soccer practice, and beat him.

this was a post about engine size and this guy say he got a v-6 cause if he wants to go fast (15.1 wow) he jumps in his bmw, and those of us with v-8 are wating our time, what are we supposed to be empressed? did i read that the wrong way?

Hey brotherdave....

I was just picking with you man. I hate driving my mustang now that I have the truck. I like those AFR heads you have. I was thinking of getting some if I rebuild the ol' mustang. I usually don't go around looking for races. If someone comes up on my side I will race if it is not crowded, but other than that I find it no fun. Only dangerous. I am actually living in Baytown for the time being. When I get married on June 1st, I will be in the Woodlands.

different ages, situations and income levels is all this is about.

i grew up in the 70's, my dad had a 1969 mach1 390, mom had a pontiac catalina (hugh car) when i was small and in 1976 we had a 1974 country squires staton wagon with 400 and a 1975 cadilac coupe deville with a 500 c.i. motor( 8 mpg average on a family trip to colorado in 1978). not small cars and probably make my supercrew look like an economy car. what did your parent drive?

if the bmw guy is 53 and raised 2 kid during the late 70 early 80 what did he drive?

02 xlt. i had a 86 gt with similar mods that ran similar times. i had a friend that put on gt-40 iron heads with an edlbrock intake and ran 12.8 @ 105, with the stock cam and speed density computer. i couldnt believe it.

Im actually jealous

One thing I always regretted was my parents got rid of the cool cars before I got to appreciate them.

HAd a early 70's firebird and a Celica, then after I got there it was Volvo Sedan, early 80's corolla, 90 MAzda MPV that was a total clunker and is dead at 96K, and now 97 Corolla. And now they're saying they want a Mustang GT once Ive moved out. Life can be so unfair sometimes.
