I just picked up my truck from the dealership after having it serviced for this and a few other issues. The solution applied was a change of the serpentine belt. No tsb was noted on the work order. I'll keep my fingers crossed...

Cool

go to www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/tsb/ and weed your way down through year, make and model prompts. (I found the tsb's using YEAR=97; MAKE=FORD TRUCK; MODEL=F150). At the component pulldown, select "Engine Cooling Systems:belts" and there are three TSB's listed. Go back and select "Engine:Timing gear and chain" and there are two TSB's (one repeated from above category) Hope this helps.

I had the noise from the sep. belt too. I have 42,000 on my 97 so I bought a new motorcraft belt & put it on. It was no fun job either!!!!!!!! The new belt was at least 3/4" shorter plus had different part # than the factory one. No more noise now!!!!!!!....Lariat#1 P.S. Belt cost $26.00 + tax.

this is a common problem with the 4.6 FEAD belt. Try replacing it with a Goodyear Gatorback belt, Summit racing sells them.
It has good grip. My belt always seemed to glaze on the back side. I think the tensioner is too weak.

mine does it to, only 8500 miles. The past few days it has been 0 degrees and it makes a real loud shreiking noise for a second. It squeeks for about 10 minutes. I think one of the accessories is not spinning freely at these temps.
Going into shop soon. I agree with Birdman the tensiner is to week. I can turn it by hand with little or no effort, seems to be a poor design in the belt area.

At 4,100 still no squealing after the first belt was changed. Take it to the dealer, have him change it.

i heard a similar noise on my 97. i thought for sure it could be the water pump. my truck has 60000 miles. i started to replace the pump when for some reason i spun the fan and heard the squeak. there is a rubber bushing in the fan that needed lube. i sprayed some lithium on it and now no more squeal. maybe this can help some of you.

i think its pretty clear this noise is from the drive belt bieng glazed. given that replacement belts are that much shorter, it would appear that a shorter belt would be the answer to the problem. I would guess cold weather begins the problem, which only gets worse everytime the belt drags. If you guys can get the belt replaced, i would bring in the gatorback belt for them to put in for you instead of the ford belt. I have the problem too, but aint ready to leave it overnight yet so they can hear it. too much trouble at this point.

I'm looking for help on a cold start noise on a 1998 F150/4x4/EC/4.6 V8/AC. As
soon as it comes off of high idle the belt/pully area starts a squeeky/rattle noise. Its
rhythmic with the belt rotation. Depending on the ambient temperature it goes away
with about 20 miles of driving.

The dealer has thrown a new belt/tensioner/crank pully on all to no avail. They have
no solution. After the last repair that involved replacing the 2 pullys the noise was
gone for abou 2 days. Its back.

There are no TSB's or factory fixes. An internet search revealed a discussion of this
problem here at F-150 online with solutions ranging from the above to changing to a
Goodyear or Gates belt to lubricating the rubber bushing on the fan all the way to
turning up your radio so you can't hear it.

I know this is an old thread but I was curious if there are any final solutions that have not been posted.

Any help on this would be appreciated.

Thanx

Greg
