I have a 1998 f-150 4.2L Six quarts of oil just isn't enough to meet the minium on my dipstick. is the dipstick wrong or the book that came with my truck.

My dealer said the part number stamped on it is for 1997 F-150
How many quarts does an 1987 take?

When are you taking the oil reading? Do you give the oil time to drain back down into the pan? 6Qts is the MAX I would ever run, I keep it at 5.5 and I am in good shape...

Mine takes six on the mark. But some engines may take more to fill.
while we're talking about oil changes with the 4.2 does any body know of a way that you can drain the oil with out it shooting out sideways almost to the passenger side tire, or remove the filter without the oil running all over the axle on 4x4 models. Does anyone have any thoughts on filter relocation kits?

BigBunnell,

On the splashing thing, I use a funnel(big one) so that it will catch the oil and make it go in to my drain pan, It seems to work well.

The filter relocation kits are available, the way that it works is that there is an adapter that fits onto your current filter area, then with the hoses that are attached you can mount your filter just about anywhere. If you mount it correctly you should have no leaks either. Also you can mount it verticle, so when you change it You don't spill any. Or you can mount it horizontal as long as it is on the bottom half of a 180 degree arc. Meaning you cant put it upside down or even at an up angle.

Cool

My 1997 4.2L uses 6 quarts even with a shiney new motorcraft filter...BTW the Motorcraft filter has metal on both ends (Fram has cardboard) and a silicone valve...worth the $.50 extra...FYI

6 quarts with filter that is all you need. On my dipstick this comes up to the 3/4 mark. The owners manual says six quarts so that is what I use. Here are some facts for us 4.2L owners.

4.2L 6 quarts of oil = 1.42 quarts per liter or 1 quart for every cylinder.

4.6L 6 quarts of oil= 1.30 quarts per liter or .75 quarts for every cylinder.

5.4L 6 quarts of oil= 1.11 quarts per liter or .75 for every cylinder

6.8L 6 quarts of oil= .88 quarts per liter or .60 quarts per cylinder

So what does this mean? The 4.2L might last longer because of the amount of oil in the engine.

Cool

What about the PSD? 7.3l and 14qts of oil. thats 1.92 qts/liter
and 1.75qts/cyl

kinda makes your gasser feel under lubricated don't it

Btw thanks for the replies, I was venting after a oil change, I do want to do the filter relocation, but I think I'm gonna try to find something else, i'd hate to have to battle ford over warranty claims for it.

I've been putting 6.5 quarts per oil change because that's what it takes to hit the top of the fill mark! Maybe I should rethink this!

Hey Road Runner, this is roadrunner - welcome to F150 online.

six LITERS of oil brings the level on my D/S reading almost to the max line - I filed a little mark at that point & now can keep accurate track. Maybe Ford did change dipsticks.
I can see how it would be confusing.

Have you asked your dealer abt this.?
